If you're wondering about the crowd you will encounter at a gym / pool / sauna.... Just consider the time of day vs who has free time around then.
Early Morning- pre-work fit go-getters...
Lunch time... everyone including office workers getting a workout in on their lunch break.
MId-Mornings / Afternoons... retired people / Stay at home parents with kids.
After 3pm... Schools are out for the day. Restaurant workers before their dinner shift.
After 4pm... After work crowd with a great mix of ages.
After 10pm- restaurant workers and others who have ended work later in the evening.
Weekends--- 1-5pm tend to be busy. People tend to sleep in...and then go out for dinner / partying later in the afternoon/ evening.
I know those are generalizations...but they hold pretty true.

I used to work out there for several years.....great venue, friendly people and hot men..many of them gay, if the sauna in the men's changing room is anything to go by.
No open showers, it's cubicles. I do recall being told it was open showers not long before I joined but then they were removed. Great shame.
I've heard it might be closing due to the lease not being renewed. that would be a great shame as it benefits a lot of the older people in the community there too in various housing trust homes nearby.

Litterally every other fitness first in the city has a mens only sauna, as well as frosted glass showers. It's the only one open during the weekend so I see why it's worth visiting then. Otherwise Fenchurch and Liverpool Street are your best bet

Mayfair has a good sized steam room in the male changing room with a varied crowd. It's currently closed for maintenance work but should be working from next week.
Clapham has a smaller steam room in the male changing room, but a hot mixed gay / straight Clapham rugby type crowd. It's best avoided around family swim hours as the changing room can get noisy.
I haven't been a for a few years, but Kensington had a steam room in the male changing room last time I visited.
Strand has only mixed spa facilities poolside, but you might see some action in the showers.
Most other clubs I know of (Bank, Moorgate, Wandsworth, Wimbledon) also have only mixed sauna / steam rooms poolside.
I should add some practical points if you've not used Virgin clubs in London before:
Most clubs have an electronic wristband system to secure your locker, so you'll need to ask for one each visit.
In many clubs Virgin now restrict complimentary towels to one per person, so you'll need to bring your own if you want to keep a dry towel for your last shower.
Will be aiming to go to Nuffield Battersea again Monday evening
I was at London newdockland steam room on Saturday. They have put metal bars on the marble tables in the cooler steam room. Presumably to stop guys lying down on the marble and massaging each other.
