Open Showers

I just dislike being enclosed in stalls.
Totally agree.
Even in my home I ripped out the tight shower stall in my master bathroom (it is now a closet, and yes, it was that small) and ripped out the bathtub in the same room (silly to have both) and turned the tub area into a nice full size shower. Add glass doors to that instead of curtains and it is a nice, bright, roomy shower experience.

I have a little more space in my bathroom than that, but I still prefer showering at the gym. Admittedly this is partly because of my nudist tendencies, but I also really like how spacious it is. And I don't have to go through the ballache of cleaning it, of course. Happy days.

Beyond that, if you want an argument to convince even the prudes of the merits of communals, remind them that cubicles may offer modesty for men who are frightened that someone might - gasp, horror! - see their little peepee,
That's the crux there at least in the US. Current batch of males seem unnereved someone might see their willie. So the absurd towel dance was created and is practiced.

So, there are a number of factors contributing to that. Families are smaller than they used to be which means many children have their own private bedroom. That was almost unheard of back in my day. Houses had fewer bathrooms - often only one - which meant sharing bathroom space.
Showers following PE classes were the norm at one time. I do not recall anyone saying that a shower was required at my school but we were given towels, which implied a shower, and after my first high school PE class everyone stripped down and headed to the showers so of course we newbies just followed suit.
I was in college in the mid-late 70s and our dorms had group showers in an open shower room. No one even expected a private shower stall. I understand that even the military academies are going the way of more privacy in the showers.

It's one of those trends that will be hard to roll back.

Men’s Locker Room Designers Take Pity on Naked Millennials (Published 2015)

Gym designers have rid locker rooms of the gnarly shower curtains, trading them in for sexy glass escape pods. They have made bathroom stalls ever more private. Comfy couch corners, Wi-Fi and lockers with built-in locks have gone from swank options to standard issue.

“Everyone wants to get upgraded now,” said Rudy Fabiano, an architect who estimates he has designed about 500 gyms in the last 25 years.

But gyms are still unable to provide the one thing younger men in particular seem to really want: a way for them to shower and change without actually being nude.

Unfortunately, one has to subscribe to the NYT to read the article.

This thread speaks volumes on how guys see group showers .......

Being 68 y.o., I am old school. I never had a problem with open showers. It is a comradery builder; a chance to really know your buddies.

When my wife and I raised our 2 children, family nudity was never a problem until our daughters got older. My wife and I continued open nudity, however, obviously, our daughters didn't.

I became a nudist in my later years. When I reveal that, some "textiles" ( non nudists ) are appalled. I quickly say that if nudism is sexual to you, then you shouldn't be at a nudist resort ( there are some couples only, swinger resorts; however they are fewer in number ). I have found that conversation and developing friendships with fellow nudists is very easy.

I am glad I have lived in the age of open showers. Take a look at what is happening. With smart phones, face to face contact is becoming less. Add shower stalls ............. even less; a sad situation. I am a very social person and I enjoy person to person contact. My life is more fulfilled because of that.

I'm old school too. And I agree 100% . Like the article I posted earlier newer generations seem quite uncomfortable with the idea someone might see them naked.

Indeed it's sad the direction we seem to be careening down the road to. Futurists in Silicon Valley, hello Metaverse, imagine a world where we sit with headsets on all day "experiencing" other people and other realities without ever leaving the house. Scary times.

I went to U of T ................ although in the mid 70s

And the best part was meeting one of my Professors in the shower. It was a totally comfortable situation. It was a "get to know each other better". Didn't see any big increase in my grade, however, still it was a great experience.

It feels like we are in a new Victorian age of modesty and chasteness. The march forward has been derailed.
