Open Showers

Starting in 7th grade P.E. showers were required after gym - I remember the teacher yelling at a kid that did not want to shower "What - you think you have something everyone else here doesn't?"

It was very awkward the first few times but after a couple of weeks we would be standing around chatting not even thinking about the fact we were naked.

Open showers lasted through high school and then in the dorms at college.

Showers after PE were also mandatory from Year 7 onwards when I was a student. And they were 100% open. Nowhere for shyness to hide, that's for sure.

Looked at the website of my old school recently. And this is how the showers now look apparently....

Nice, bright, and clean lookin gshower room.
I wonder, though, why they posted a picture of the shower room on the school's webpage.

That did cross my mind too.

Showing prospective parents their sons will have somewhere decent to shower after PE maybe?

I’m 52, and still remember open showers all growing up. Which is great, as my gym’s men’s locker room not only has a large, communal shower, but there’s also a whirlpool, sauna and steam room, as well as a large countertop/sink dressing area. Lots of nudity, just like it’s no big deal. Because, you know, it isn’t???

It is what it is but I fear the tao of being naked and open vulnerably is being lost as we retreat into our little silos that bring nothing but anxiety and little upside.

Nothing positive comes from separating ourselves, particularly with something as *basic* as being naked around each other. Literally “exposing” ourselves in safe places is so incredibly freeing, but our cages are shiny, complete with smart phones and streaming services in them; there, we can be the “online versions” of ourselves, which is nothing but smoke and mirrors of how we want to represent who we are. Naked, in a shower with other guys? Where are ya gonna hide then? And who can you fool?

Nice and clean and open.
The showers have certainly had something of a refit in the years between my attendance at the school and whenever that pic was taken. They're definitely in the same spot - and as fully open and communal - but they didn't used to be that bright and modern!
