A woman wearing a United Workers Union Hat

With three SA tomato businesses, including a major supplier, forced into quarantine because of the outbreak of a crop virus, workers like Sharon Tarisesei have lost their jobs, and are apprehensive about securing future employment.

Woman grocery shopping in dairy aisle

A new report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has found many Australians have lost trust in supermarkets as it investigates the mega grocers' market power and potential barriers to entry in the sector.

Four men in hats, caps, two have grey moustache, stand on boat with shovel, nets, water in background.

Once depleted and forgotten, native oysters are back in Coffin Bay after moves to revive the "ecological superheroes".

A hand holds a plant with green leaves and long white thorns.

The karroo thorn can overrun landscapes and make farmland unproductive, so farmers and biosecurity officers are rejoicing at this eradication achievement.

Earth will capture 'second moon' this weekend
Earth will capture 'second moon' this weekend
(Robert Lea (created with Canva))

NASA scientists have calculated that Earth will capture a "second moon" on Sunday (Sept. 29). The "mini-moon" comes in the form of the tiny asteroid 2024 PT5, which usually orbits the sun as part of a small asteroid belt that follows Earth. While Earth's primary companion, the moon, has lingered around our planet for around 4 billion years since its formation in the solar system's infancy, this asteroid will be a temporary fixture that won't even see the year out.

Ancient universe surprisingly crowded by monster black holes
Ancient universe surprisingly crowded by monster black holes
(NASA, ESA, and S. Beckwith (STScI) and the HUDF Team)
A host of supermassive black holes populating the universe during the cosmic dark ages appears to drastically exceed estimates for how many billion-solar-mass black holes should have existed back then. The surprising find is the result of a 14-year study conducted with the Hubble Space Telescope. The study team, led by Matthew Hayes of Stockholm University, searched for these early supermassive black holes by scouring the Hubble Ultra Deep Field for any faint objects that seem to exhibit variable brightness.

A next-generation space debris protection material is readying for a test trip to the International Space Station. The material, a sibling of the space-blanket polymer Kevlar, has been developed by chemical giant DuPont and tested by NASA at its White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. The tests showed that the new Kevlar "EXO" material provides better protection against space debris impacts while being significantly lighter than conventional Kevlar.

Space Marine 2 is an old-school third-person action game — the kind of thing we saw all the time during the Xbox 360 era that spawned its predecessor, but that has dropped out of favor in recent years. This past week, we tracked the path of Hurricane Helene as it barrelled toward Florida, where it crashed into the state’s coast with a massive storm surge before churning across the Southeast.

Maps and forecasts by the National Weather Service and its parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, helped communities prepare for the storm and issue evacuation orders to those in its path.

Those services are targeted for drastic changes in Project 2025, the roadmap for the next conservative president that seeks to break up and downsize NOAA for being “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry.”
