'Ring of fire' solar eclipse over Easter Island amazes!
(Jamie Carter)
On Wednesday, a lucky handful of skywatchers watched as the sun transformed into a stunning "ring of fire" in the sky over the remote Easter Island in the Pacific ocean and parts of South America. The result: A spectacular celestial event that won't happen there again for centuries.

Aurora alert! Possible geomagnetic storm coming
(NurPhoto/Getty Images)

Aurora chasers get those cameras on charge!Due to heightened solar activity, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a geomagnetic storm warning for Oct. 3 through to Oct.5. This is great news for those wishing to see the northern lights because if the predicted G3 conditions are reached we could witness auroras deep into mid-latitudes (around 50°) and as far south as Illinois and Oregon.

We're one step closer to finding out why Siberia is riddled with exploding craters
A new physical model suggests meltwater from thawing permafrost on Russia's Yamal Peninsula can unlock methane sources at depth, triggering explosions that open enormous craters at the surface.

Put Interest On Ice Until Nearly 2026
Did you know some credit cards can actually help you get out of debt faster? Yes, it sounds crazy. But it's true. The secret: Find a card with a "0% intro APR" period for balance transfers. Then, transfer your debt balance and pay it down as much as possible during the intro period. No interest means you could pay off the debt faster. Find out more

BepiColombo unraveling the Mercury's magnetic mystery
BepiColombo unraveling the Mercury's magnetic mystery
(Robert Lea (created with Canva)/NASA)
The BepiColombo spacecraft may have only made rapid flybys of Mercury, but it is already helping to unravel mysteries surrounding the closest planet to the sun. In 2026, a European Space Agency (ESA)/Japan Aerospace Agency (JAXA) joint mission will fall into orbit around Mercury, the solar system's smallest planet. However, to do that, the spacecraft first needs to make several flybys of Mercury, Venus and Earth. Fortunately, these flybys are proving invaluable to science.

JWST finds supernova that could resolve astronomy debate
JWST finds supernova that could resolve astronomy debate
(NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, B. Frye (University of Arizona), R. Windhorst (Arizona State University), S. Cohen (Arizona State University), J. D’Silva (University of Western Australia, Perth), A. Koekemoer (Space Telescope Science Institute), J. Summers (Arizona State University))
Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have captured a stunning image of a distant supernova in a galaxy that looks like it's being stretched like warm taffy. However, the golden smear hiding this gravitationally lensed supernova, which has been nicknamed "supernova Hope," isn't just remarkable for its aesthetic value. The supernova, which exploded when the 13.8-billion-year-old universe was just around 3.5 billion years old, tells us something about a huge problem in cosmology called the "Hubble tension."

We think it’s safe to say there’s no other celebration in the world quite like Mongolia’s Thousand Camel Festival. Every year, nomadic camel herders from across the Gobi load up their “ships of the desert” and travel to Dalanzadgad for a raucous celebration of all things camel. There’s camel polo, a camel rodeo, kids’ camel races, even a camel beauty contest. But above all, there’s just a fun spirit of conviviality for a nomadic community that spends much of the year in relative isolation. In short, it’s a party like no other—and you’re invited!

On our trip to the winter camel festival, we spend two full days taking in the festivities, starting our first night there with the camel herders’ singing contest and dance party. Along the way, we’ll take in Mongolia’s striking landscapes and thousands of years of history—exploring Gandan Monastery with a Lama, searching for dinosaur fossils at the Flaming Cliffs, staying at a winter-equipped ger gamp to take in starry desert skies, and discovering frozen waterfalls amongst the towering rock formations of Mukha

Watch the video in the player above.

An asteroid that fully orbits Earth is officially known as a mini moon, but because this one will only stay for about two months, not everyone agrees it deserves the name.

Still, studying 2024 PT5 helps scientists gather data on asteroids generally, which could inform future asteroid mining missions or help us deflect dangerous objects from hitting our planet.

And before you go …

My photos are usually "water-centric". So this is a rarity from me......no river/sea in sight!

I'm not too sure why I feel this one is worthy of sharing, to be honest. (It's certainly not my favourite of the pics I've taken this week.) I don't know.....do I like the geometry of the shapes, and the various colours? Possibly.

My local railway station at sunset earlier this week....
