So Tubbo and Ranboo were either secretly dating or fooling around as friends, Ranboo then moves in with Tubbo for 6 months and hangs out with him and his friends to spend more time together. Then Ranboo wanted to move to the UK but Tubbo wanted to move to the US. Out of nowhere they stop hanging out after Tubbos subathon.
Tubbo and Ranboo DSMP lore stops never mix relationship with storytelling. Ranboo talks about being rejected by someone close aka Tubbo and cries for days meanwhile, Tubbo mentions his new boyfriend and stoops hang out with Aimsey and Billzo and can't stand seeing Ranboo. when did he get rejected by someone close?
Rabbo got rejected before he went to the UK because the stream where he first talks about it is from May 2021 and they met up in June 2021
Ranboo got doxxed on twitter at the very beginning of his trip last year which resulted in his mental health declining, he promised to do so many things with Tubbo but then it never happened. Tubbo also had some issues with his discord and mods at the time and people started noticing Tubbo and Ran being distant or passive aggressive towards each other, it was obvious something shifted, they did not stream together much, Ranboo got closer to Bill.
Tubbo started dating his current boyfriend this January. And Ranboo had a break from streaming around that time and mentioned how his mental health was bad, vented in his ranmail (I'll attach the pic) we don't know if it had anything to do with Tubbo getting in a relationship though. He then moved to the UK and came out soon after.
He seems to be doing so much better these days.

You can also just fall out or grow apart as friends and that is also depressing and can send you into a weird mental place. That whole story a few posts up has a hint of conspiracy to it.
There has been a theory/text going around Twitter that seems a bit more plausible.
Basically from what I remember, they were a thing, or close to being a thing, but during that 6 month visit they began to drift apart, perhaps because Ran's mental health wasn't the best a the time, and like stated above, they didn't do as much together as they could given it was meant to be a temporary visit before Ran decided to move to the UK, to the point that by the end of the visit he was more closer to Bill rather then Tub interaction wise.
While this was happening, Tub reconnected whit a friend, who he eventually began dating around January, which took a bit of a toll on Ran, as he perhaps blamed himself for where things ended up at, leading him to a bit of a depressive phase.
Fast forward to the subathon, Ran is still making an effort to keep the friendship alive by appearing here and there for it, but perhaps it became too awkward for Tub (be it because it was just not the same or there is still some feelings between them) to the point Tub completely muted and went radio silent on Ran on all platforms, unless forced to be in the same place by events like the Paint Day event.
Meanwhile Ran still tried every now and then to interact whit Tub, maybe to try to see if he was willing to at least go back to being friends given Ran seemed to cherish that a lot, but it seems it was useless based on the 0 interaction we have seen between them, whit Tub also seemingly becoming more distant from Aimsey and Bill who are a main part of Ran's current streamer friend circle, as he got even more closer to them since moving to the UK, whit Bill visiting him seemingly a whole lot.
Think the above is a good summary of what I saw, the highschool story is most likely unrelated to Tub, but its safe to say that by the time Ran came out, he and Tub were already in no speaking terms and that during the Subathon they were already on a breaking point friendship wise.
There's also the other option of, like Wilbur and Niki, they got sick of people being weird and constantly shipping them that they just took their friendship offline. Regardless though we'll most likely never get an answer from them so the speculation is pointless.
I do agree with you though that it seems more likely that Tubbo is the one that pulled himself away for one reason or another, seeing as Ranboo does still mention him occasionally and is still being supportive of TubNet and everything

Guys, they were a thing, it ended badly, as relationships sometimes do. Now they have to keep up appearances because they're basically 'co-workers' (both being British based Minecraft streamers). The breakup complicated a developing living/business relationship (the 'streamer house' that seemed to be the goal of everyone who stayed/streamed at Tubbo's place) and now we're seeing the consequences.
This is the perfectly adult result to a perfectly adult breakup between two adults who met through their business.
It's perfectly clear to anyone with adult critical thinking skills.

That's a realistic situation, but that doesn't mean it's a reasonable assumption from an outsiders perspective.
There's not much sense on speculating, for all we know they could still be interacting in real life and just agreed to not interact online to stop the shipping and stuff. Until they don't confirm it we don't have anything
i think they are still hanging out but they chose to stop hanging out online because of all the shiping and stuff since it would be akward with tubbo having a boyfriend
