Random thoughts

I would have thought you would have gone with prawns, cold ham and salads.
I know that in my neck of the woods at least, it's too fucking hot.
Also every Christmas except last we've been under a cyclone advisory.
Stocking up on jerry cans of fuel, checking gen-sets, filling gas bottles, storing lawn furniture, securing animals.
The local pub does a roaring trade with lines around the block to stock up for first cyclone party
of the wet season.
After all, if the power is going to go out for a extended period of time it's best to have a massive bbq to reduce the
freezer contents and invite a few mates.
Only southerners go to the grocery store to buy bread and milk when they won't have the electricity to keep them fresh.
Seafood is too expensive at Christmas. Plus I live in a coastal area so all the seafood shops are just p-a-c-k-e-d with customers. I like prawns, but not enough to queue up for 30 minutes and spend a fortune on.

I do love cold ham and we'll be having that.

It's just dad and I now, so we'll just get some slices of turkey and ham from the deli. A full turkey (even a small one) and a leg of ham is just too much. My brother and his family always visit over Christmas/New Year so we have a special dinner then.

Countries vote to protect endangered mako sharks
Mako sharks have practically disappeared from the Mediterranean, and their numbers have plunged in other seas, too. Japan and China opposed a global initiative to save them from extinction but most countries endorsed it.

Delegates from 120 countries on Sunday adopted a proposal to protect 18 threatened species of sharks and rays, including makos, at the CITES global wildlife trade summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

The species will be listed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix II if the preliminary decision is endorsed.

Giraffes move closer to endangered species protection
The tallest living land animal faces 'silent extinction,' one conservation group has said. Some 106 countries backed a CITES protection, paving the way toward regulating international trade in giraffes.

For the first time, nations moved to protect giraffes as an endangered species on Thursday.

The vote, taken in a key committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) paves the way for the approval of a measure which would regulate the world trade of giraffe parts including hides, bone carvings and meat.

Berlin Zoo says panda Meng Meng is pregnant
Meng Meng, a female giant panda, is expecting at least one cub, the Berlin Zoo announced, saying it was "overjoyed" with the news. Meng Meng's cub would be the first baby panda to be born in Germany.

Meng Meng, a giant panda on loan from China and one of the stars of the Berlin Zoo, is pregnant, the zoo announced on Tuesday.

An ultrasound revealed the good news — marking a possible breakthrough in the zoo's efforts to breed Meng Meng and her male partner, Jiao Qing, since they arrived at the zoo in 2017.

The zoo posted a video of the ultrasound on Twitter, saying it shows a "mini-panda with a fast-beating heart."

Meng Meng is expecting at least one cub, which the zoo says could be delivered within the next one or two weeks.

If all goes well, Meng Meng's cub would be the first baby panda to be born in Germany.

"We are overjoyed with the news. For endangered species like the pandas, every offspring is a great gift," zoo director Andreas Knieriem said in a statement.

    Bamboozled
Meng Meng and Jiao Qing appear to have made themselves at home in Berlin, where measures have been taken to ensure their surroundings are to their liking. That includes lots of bamboo, a favorite food of the black-and-white bears.

Zoo on panda baby-watch

Already two weeks ago, the zoo in the German capital voiced hopes that Meng Meng was pregnant, but it proved difficult to get the 92-kilogram (203-pound) panda to lie still for an examination.

The zoo said that its team of veterinarians and biologists as well as Chinese panda breeding experts are keeping an eye on Meng Meng and that night shifts have been implemented to monitor the mother-to-be if she goes into labor.

After around six to eight months in the womb, panda cubs are born blind with very little fur — often weighing only 90 to 130 grams (3 to 4.6 ounces).

An ambitious research project aims to assess the state of mental-health resources and support for graduate students. The 22-month initiative is a joint venture of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) in Washington DC and the Jed Foundation, a non-profit organization in New York City that focuses on the mental health of young adults. The initiative will explore current schemes and programmes centred on student wellness at CGS member universities in the United States and Canada, and provide recommendations for future approaches to promote mental and emotional well-being in students.
