Sleeping Well May Help Prevent Alzheimer's
We may be able to reduce our risk of Alzheimer's by making an effort to get high-quality sleep, according to new research.

A study shows that the brain waves generated during deep sleep appear to clean toxins from the brain, protecting it against Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Scientists already knew there was a link between sleep problems and Alzheimer's. But in this study, for the first time researchers watched what happens in the brains of sleeping people, using fMRI technology.

Read more to learn how deep sleep works to keep our brains healthy.

BONUS: Working Americans are getting less sleep than ever, especially these professions.

The Risks Of Trying Cannabis For Morning Sickness
The Food and Drug Administration recently issued a statement in which it "strongly" advised women not to use cannabis in any form — including CBD — when pregnant or breastfeeding, because it may pose "serious risks."

But for a subset of women with extreme cases of morning sickness, so bad they can't eat enough to stay nourished, cannabis is an appealing option. And more pregnant women than ever are trying it.

Read on to learn about the risks it may pose to the developing fetus.

A Hamilton man bought 1000 hens at an auction when he thought he was bidding on just one (file photo).
A man is desperate to re-home 1000 hens after he accidentally bought them in an online auction for $1.50.

Steve Morrow from Hamilton said he saw the "urgent sale" on Trade Me and thought he was bidding for only one bird.

But when he won the auction at 11am on Sunday, he was told by the seller, Matthew Blomfield, that he had in fact bought 1000 of them.

The ad read that a small free-range egg farm based in Massey, West Auckland, was closing down and needed to be vacated by Monday.

"As a matter of urgency, we need to move approximately 1000 hens," it read.

The sale was for "one 1000" birds, a mixed age flock of brown shavers and highlines.

Morrow said he thought the highest bidder could take as many birds as they wanted and the seller would continue to auction the rest of them off until they were all gone.

He said he put in an auto bid for $20, thinking he could at least get two hens.

"When the auction closed, I thought 'this is great', I could take as many birds as I wanted," Morrow said.

"But when I spoke to the man and he said it was for 1000 hens ... holy moly, I was stunned, I can tell you that."

He said he had read the ad more than three times and admitted the "wording was confusing".

It's actually pretty easy to figure out why old asylums are dark and scary places. Even modern ones are not pleasant places to be, but in the old days you could be locked away for the rest of your life at the mercy of "doctors" who basically used the patients as guinea pigs to practice barbaric surgeries and tortures on them. Not to mention random abuse at the hands of the staff/other patients.

My wife has told me stories about a tubercularium/asylum near where she used to live called Waverly Hills. It's been shut down since the 1950s if I'm not mistaken, but it had a very dark past. Most floors hosted the tuberculosis patients but one of them had the disturbed ward and some terrible things transpired in that place.

oh yes worldwide Todd i am sure
ive had 1st hand experience of the abuse suffered by a young patient as well
the wife of a charge nurse who was in a position to protect her
i finally got her sacked despite his authority
she was only a nurse aide like myself
but swinging her key' leaving bruises on the young guy,i made sure it was noted by higher authorities than a charge nurse

had to leave the job because of those that supported him, but no worries, happy to

ghosts, or patients howling when a full moon was about
different story
but then i am convinced we are likely all affected by that period, we are just more cunning at hiding it huh ha

Agreed, the hospitals' treatment of mental illness in the distant (and not-so-distant) past leaves a lot to be desired. This article makes some very grim reading:

Sydney’s shameful asylums: The silent houses of pain where inmates were chained and sadists reigned

When I was growing up, the big scandal in Australia was the Chelmsford Hospital (mentioned in the article). Deep Sleep Therapy (DST) was not unique to Chelmsford, but by all accounts they took it to an extreme level. Some more grim reading:

Truly mortifying. This Dr. Bailey ruined a lot of people with his methods. At least he came to a suitably ignominious end.

Drugging people into basically a comatose state and shocking them. It's not much better than trepanning and performing exorcisms on them.

all stories personal or what youve heard and relating are more than likely gospel
destined to work with people hands on entire life and experienced such
dont need often fuzzed over govt stats to say so

took part in the closure of our mental institutions and it actually went from very bad to just as bad

the people coming off unnecessary medication, it worked well, only if there were dedicated carers to ensure it happened
