Opinion: Your dog could be the ideal parent for the next generation of pets, so think before you snip
People want their dogs to suit their family's needs: tall or short, short-coated or non-shedding, couch potato or running buddy. But we could be removing the best source of happy healthy pets from the gene pool.

UNEP: 1.5C climate target ‘slipping out of reach’ | Carbon Brief

Unless the world begins to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement “will slip out of reach,”

"The annual report, now in its 10th year, provides a “bleak” assessment of the ever-growing gap between actual emission reduction commitments by countries and those necessary to achieve the goals of the
Paris Agreement: to limit warming to “well-below 2C above preindustrial levels” and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5C.

Global CO2 emissions have increased by around 11% since the first UNEP emissions gap report in 2010. Each year of growing global emissions means that deeper and faster cuts are needed to meet the Paris Agreement targets, and increases the amount of CO2 that would need to be removed from the atmosphere through negative emissions to make the 1.5C target viable.

The 2019 emission gap report suggests that there is no sign of GHG emissions peaking in the next few years. Even if countries meet their existing climate pledges (nationally determined contributions, NDCs) emissions will continue to rise modestly over the next decade, it says. By 2030, the UNEP report estimates that emissions will be 27% and 38% higher than is needed to limit warming to 2C and 1.5C, respectively."

Oh for goodness sake...........here is the science facts.

The planet controls the climate. It has gone through freeze and thaw since time began. In the last Interglacial period the oceans were 10 to 12 metres higher than they are today.

Enter humans 200,000 years ago.....just before the last ice age. Being the way we are we chopped, chopped, cleared and burned...burned and burned again anything that would burn....because we discovered fire and became natural pyros........... Fire kept humans alive through the the last ice age., we as a species nearly became extinct 70,000 years ago..........there were about 30,000 left on the whole planet.......with a whole lot more forest.

Fast forward to today......... we are still burning, still clearing, still chopping and digging holes for mining....

If we had half the forests that we have cleared over thousands of years there would be no hysterics.

The Earths axis changes dictate the climate.........humans have accelerated it by clearing the world's forests. Deforestation.

We are elongating the interglacial period by warming...........we should have entered the early ages of ice 300 years ago.

The oceans will eventually rise and cover what they covered and have covered, frozen and thawed over millions of years...since time here began.

Just that stupid humans built their cities in low lying areas. Australian Aboriginals walked here...not sailed....most of the worlds land bridges went under 6,000 years ago...........sea levels were 100 metres lower back then.....then because of Earths axial shifts.....it thawed and they were flooded.

This is proved science........not theoretical. You build anywhere on sand, or with some sand or loam cover........it has been under water.

pleased my parents were natural born organic commercial growers that brought us kids up in a safe healthy chemical free environment
just a natural way of survival
talking generational now
only one brother was enough to destroy.perhaps change to the modern way of farming with fertilizers/chemicals etc
because he was educated, had learnt what was available in our modern world
the common reason/excuse at the time the soil was overtly depleted of its minerals etc, other 'educated' persons on there lives paths said so
keep in mind chemical corporates were all gung ho at the time50s/ 60s onwards
such things as phosphorous was available from nearby Nauru
so rape that country using trade as the reason,as a compared to local old fowl manure etc/minimal transport
plus of course the country/people deserve a better life was the excuse
never to really benefit in reality
but
overall we humans cant really complain,in that that is/was the way of the world
at the time
progress huh ... unfortunately
indigenous now, have our thoughts tuned to land preservation
but corporates have the monopoly/dictatorship role now i geuss
the wealth of course to ensure it happens

RB...as much as I would love to agree with indigenous beliefs............The first settlers to Australia burned the forests, and burned the forests again through 60,000 years......because it made grassland and easier to hunt for food.

Now we are left with only highly inflammable Eucalypt.

Why does California suffer from the same disastrous fires we do..........because the Eucalypt was imported there over a hundred years ago and has taken over their native bushland species............ look it up. It's a noxious weed there.

Scientists worry because the Eucalypt is highly adaptable and has been exported everywhere.....our native plant is a noxious weed which is turning the worlds forests into wildfire zones...wiping out their indigenous tree species.

Watched a 1950 movie the other day RB Cairo Road.............

Seems things have not changed much in 70 years. The movie was overacted.......but hiding tubes of drugs in camels stomachs even existed then.

Drugs were outlawed because they became rife in the 1920's and were destroying society.

Our first settlers did not evolve here............they bought issues with them too...........just like the Europeans.

The problem is...............We don't learn....even after thousands of years.

Dear E360 Reader,

2019 has been an exciting year for Yale Environment 360. Over the last 12 months, we’ve published nearly 100 feature articles, analyses, and opinion pieces on critical environmental issues, with reporting from all seven continents. We’ve delivered sustained coverage of rapid changes to the world’s climate, the transition to a clean economy, and the loss of biodiversity, as well as a series on the future of the Colorado River and water in the American West. We also launched several new publishing partnerships this year — with PBS NewsHour, Climate Desk, and the BBC — significantly increasing the reach and impact of our reporting.

But this award-winning journalism and thought-provoking commentary cannot be produced without your support.

Now through December 31, all donations to Yale Environment 360 will be tripled, up to $1,000 per gift.

commiserations to the 9 lives lost

Australians will ring in the new year with a bang tonight — literally — as traditional fireworks displays light up many cities. But what if they didn't?

Wind changes sweeping Victoria are pushing flames towards rural towns, bringing new challenges for communities and authorities threatened by blazes in the state's east.

Firefighter died after winds lifted 10-tonne truck off the ground in 'freakish weather event'

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service says the truck landed on its roof, crushing 28-year-old volunteer Samuel McPaul, while a second truck was also tipped over.

Could drones replace Sydney's New Year's Eve fireworks?
