Yes, Shawn can sing in tune...but so can most of the finalists in any singing contest.
He has a big girlie fanbase, so others write songs for him. Thus, as a performer, he gets "token" songwriting credits, lol.

One big difference that I see between Mendes and Mayer is that Mayer has actual talents...John wrote his own songs and is a worldly guitar player. Otoh, Shawn Mendes is just a "Manufactured by Committee" Cosplay with a pretty face.

Case in point, he dropped songs, and *most* of the buzz on this site was about his physical attributes and that he should show his ass, lol

I finally listened to the song, and while it's far from horrible, it really does sound like a generic, warmed over Mumford & Sons/Lumineers reject. Noah Kahan's music strikes me in a similar way, but at least he has a distinct voice that fits the style. Shawn's voice still reminds me of a cute boy doing covers on Vine. Not bad, but not earthy enough for the genre he's playing with.

Looks good shirtless though.

I'm here to point out the production reality of the Mendes Experience, the bts of his Cosplay.

I don't have a deep hatred for Shawn...I'm actually a fan of Mr. Mendes...I'm a fan of mediocrity.

You guys have to realize Shawn doesn’t want to be a big pop star in music. I don’t think he wants the crazy level of fame big stars like Harry, Bey, Taylor have. It gave him anxiety and it is why he quit music for years. He doesnt want to be in the mindset of worrying to always make hit songs and albums. I think now he wants to make music that inspires him. I don’t think he is interested in making commercial music anymore and he is fine with it. I think he has enough money to not care about the charts anymore.

The Shawn Mendes era we knew is gone. He gave that up at the height of his fame. Literally quit. He doesn’t want to get it back. I think he wants a more low key fame where he can move about without security and live a normal life.


I dont think his label wants to invest money in pushing him. He will be very hard to insure if he tours again. Not everyone will buy his music and I think he has made peace with that. I like the new song. Its nice to listen to it at a park or by a river. It’s chill.

Mediocrity on everything except for looks -> realizing one's own mediocrity -> leading to personal distress -> causing anxiety = Shawn Mendes

In the early days of social media (only YouTube back then, lol)...a lot of kids got very famous (and rich) for looks and/or personalities only...with very little talents (Tyler Oakley, O2L, Zoella, gamers, etc.). Shawn caught the first (and only) wave of that "star making" opportunity.

If Shawn was born 5 years later, none of the *cringing* covers and videos that he posted on Youtube would have caused any ripple, buzz or garnered much attention. He was a product of great *timing*...the perfect storm.
