This is a much-de(mastur)bated question. I myself think it was just a way to save money on material on the production of zillions of jocks over the decades. Others state that it's to allow your ass/arse to breathe and not get sweaty.
I grant that it does indeed look a little gay now; however, in my generation they were considered the norm, a rite-of-passage (as I said) tho' also comic in some settings, like putting object in the pouch and swinging it like a slingshot, or pouring ICY HOT (a muscle rub that burned) into someone's jock pouch as a joke, etc. If you look at those videos I mentioned ("Straight off the Mat" by Franco) you'll see lots of guys just standing around in jocks, which is the way it was for many of us.
