it was the studio system days- they were told to go out with them- the girls were under contract and did what they were told...the publicity was helpful for them as well- it may have increased their popularity which could have led to better film roles given to them by the studio

Yes, many of the "dates" were starlets, secretaries or other employees of the studio. The bachelor actors were seen around town with the girls and the girls in return got their faces out in the public press.

I always heard he was well hung.

By most accounts, it was certainly true. I had/have family in the motion picture business going back for decades and they've heard stories as well as working with Cooper in person.
