Sam said they were the first Gay person to win an Oscar when they won for the Bond Song. Lance replied correcting Sam since Lance had previously won for the movie Milk. People assumed Lance was angry for upset with Sam and blew the situation out of proportion. There's nothing to indicate Lance is at all the "jealous type".

Sam had been told that there had been no out openly gay ACTORS who had won an Oscar at the time and he seemed to have understood it as no gay person at all had won an Oscar... (gay actors had won Oscars, but they had won at a time when they were still closeted)

FYI Lance was hired to review Milk one last time. Made a few changes and hit go. Demanded the full writing credit and nabbed the Oscar. I guess Sam can say he's the forest gay man to win the Oscar for all his own work.

Van Sant has said privately he basically rewrote the entire script after Lance. Its alluded to a lot movie podcasts if you're into that kind of thing.

There's always a lot of behind the scenes talk when one person wins a writing Oscar and other people feel left out or people feel someone else contributed and should have been recognized, regardless, Gus and Lance worked together again on When We Rise so I doubt there was any real or lingering bad blood. People just want to hype up drama for the sake of drama.

People are gonna come at me for this, but Milk is basically just a word for word retread of the excellent Times of Harvey Milk documentary film, and nothing else that Lance has done before or since has really been successful. But hey, he got rich, got an Oscar, and bagged the most eligible twink of a generation, so good for him.
