Obviously I don't him personally, but as a bi guy I can tell that navigating love and relationships it's hard, not to mention the world is constantly pressuring to have hetero relationships cause it's the "norm"

I know it sounds like a fairytale but maybe he developed a strong bond with DJ that transcended sexuality. Maybe he didn't even think about it being gay or him being bi. I wish more people approached things this way. Society is so restrictive. That may not be this situation but it made me think about it.
