I hate to admit it, but I am now one of those older guys that walk around the locker room letting it all hang out. The reason is that was the norm when I was younger from having to take a shower after gym class. Open showers were the norm until I was in my early 30’s.
What started guys bring afraid someone might see their dick is a lawsuit. We all went through the initial anxiety of showering naked. Some kid complained to his parents and the ACLU got involved. School had to fold on shower policy after gym class because the legal fees they faced were too high to go to court. This set precedent. My sons come home from gym class the first day with a letter encouraging a shower for hygiene purposes but not mandatory. I could not get my sons to take a shower as no one else did. Everyone just applies more deodorant and body spray.
I read somewhere but I cannot find it again that there is a bonding among guys when hanging out together naked. Being nude does not mean it is sexual. Looking back I believe this to be true. Guys on my floor in the dorms and bros that I would go to the gym with taking a shower in an open shower was the norm. 30 years ago I had a Falcon porn star looking guy shave his ass next to me at the next shower head, bend over and grab his knees and ask if he got it all. It was a very gay neighborhood. The straight guys learned not to shower in the open showers ( remember them) there.

It's simply the product of infantilised men who are shit scared of someone else seeing their willy, combined with the provision of shower stalls that they can hide in. You don't see these silly performances being done by anybody in gyms with communals, where the clientele divides neatly into the go home sweaties and the grown ups.
This is literally what you see as soon as you walk into my gym’s locker room. It’s like a display case.

My gyms here are pretty uptight as far as locker room nudity. With a rare exception, no one walks to or from the shower area naked, usually with a towel wrapped around their waists. Showers themselves are stalls with frosted glass doors. There is a rule that you MUST wear shorts or a towel in the sauna, steam, and hot tub. Many guys--I'd say most under 30 or even 40--do a silly "towel dance" where they wrap a towel around themselves to change boxer briefs. I do not do that. One or two guys are very comfortable being naked. One buddy of mine if I see him at ocker and stop to say hello will face me full-on naked while he dries off or starts to get dressed. That is how it should be.

It's more of an anxiety symptom for me, kinda like the "don't think of an elephant" thing. I feel like I never got out of that teenage phase of getting boners at the most awkward moments (class presentations, etc.). It's not really sexual most of the times.
Also, if you didn't get any gratification from being around a bunch of naked men then you wouldn't be in this thread

hzs...is wrong. Guys do the towel dance because they are insecure and usually they are the ones that are checking out the other guys. I couldn't care less if anyone looked at my package. I sometimes wonder if those towel-dance guys are insecure and worry thheir dicks are small and do nto want anyone to see how small. Or at the other extreme maybe they think they are hung big and do not want anyone to check them out.

Rarelly come across a few guys with that normal, relaxed attitude in my US gyms. Maybe if I trianed at a more "gay friendly" gym, one wth a m higher proporiton of gay memebrs, it would b more noraml and accepted to be naked in the locker oom and in the sauna. But at my G-rated suburban gym, almost no one walks naked to the showers (which are all individual stalls with doors) and if one tired to sit naed in the suana if mght result in someone calling the manager and report it as a violation of the gym rules.

Sure, not every guy has the same reason for covering up. I have so many stories. One of my favorites was at the 24-hour Ultra in Irvine CA (they closed) in the men's steam. In my gym here in Spain there's a communal shower that's hardly used because there are stalls but without doors or curtains, so you fully see the person in the stall in front of you - there's not a lot of people at the times I go thought, so I haven't been in that situation.
