I would like to know what was the most popular underwear style when you were younger? or, what is the most popular underwear style in your country/city now?

I grew up in Puerto Rico, and in the 90s most guys there used to wear either white briefs (tighty whities) or bikini briefs or slips (similar to the one in the photos below) Boxers were not common and I don't remember guys wearing boxer briefs. Then, I went to college in the United States (Northeast in the late 90s/early 2000s) and boxers were everywhere, some guys used to wear tighty whities and a few long-legged boxer briefs.

Hi. Well here in the UK in my younger years White ''Y'' Fronts was all the rage in 1969 - 1972 . Then the colored briefs came out so started waring them. Now boxer briefs are very popular around here and i ware them most of the time.

I grew up in Canada in the 90s and early 00s.

Boxers became popular in the mid 90s and briefs became uncool, childish, or "gay". Boxer briefs started to come into fashion around 2005. They are now the predominant underwear style for most men probably 45 and under.

High school early '90s lower midwest. Briefs, mostly TWs & colored fly front briefs with some bikini/sport briefs mixed in. The transition to boxers was very close. Seems like boxers are still going pretty strong here. For me, started in TWs and often added sport/bikini briefs for support. I tried boxers and hated them. Also tried boxerbriefs and didn't like them either. My boys need separation & support.

I grew up in the 1980’s and early 1990’s and it was all white Hanes or FTL briefs with a few fashion briefs in the mix. A few BVD’s. I did see a few guys wear bikini briefs in high school (Brittania, Honors, and Generation Two). I didn’t see anyone wear boxer briefs until my freshman year in college.

I grew up in the 90s and 2000s. Where I live, growing up it was still pretty much briefs. most seemed to wear white ones but a lot had colored briefs too. Then once I entered high school lots of guys in my class switched to boxers. Plenty still wore briefs but by high s hook most stopped wearing white ones. I never recall seeing anyone wear boxer briefs back then. It was till I was out of high school and going to a gym where I saw guys in the locker room wearing boxer brief.

In Ireland growing up (I’m 36), loose boxers became very popular in the early 90s but it’s all about boxer brief/trunks since the mid 2000s.

Personally speaking I’ve done a 180 and I’m more of a hip brief guy these days (Armani, CK, etc).

Tighty whities in the 1960s and 1970s.
Ditto. I added colored FTL briefs in the '70s, also tried bikini briefs. Back then, no young guys that I knew wore boxers. They were dad's underwear. Midway briefs from Sears catalog (now called boxer briefs) were uncommon. Boxerbriefs as we know them today took off in the late '90s.

I grew up in the 00s and early-10s and pretty much the same for me. White briefs were most common, then colored briefs, then boxers became a lot more common than colored briefs. Within a few years it goes from maybe 90% briefs to 10% briefs.

When I went to college, briefs started becoming more popular again, perhaps because there was less peer pressure and people are more mature. But also around that time (middle of last decade) the baggy fashion was giving way to more form-fitting styles. Boxers weren't anywhere near as common as the HS locker room.

They also tend to be more popular among athletes for the support. For sports like running, soccer, and wrestling, it's mostly briefs and boxer briefs. Swimmers wear briefs as a uniform and many wear as underwear too.
