He's visiting his parents; he's not back living with them. I think they've always been on good terms; it's just that they don't financially support him anymore since he dropped out of college.

This is still a leap in logic. My parents have never supported me in college because I don't need the support. Same could be for him. We don't know we aren't his friend. Its super parasocial. I don't think if you're loaded that your parents care if you're going to college or not as long as you're doing something in life. In my case my parents are happy that im exceeding their expectations. Yet I don't need them at all which makes them sad.
