i'm surprised the number of players that don't wear any jock or cup; aren't they worried about getting hit in the crotch??
I've seen comments from athletes that cups slow them down, and in sports, a fraction of a second can make a big difference. And I think uniform pants used today (compression-style) give "the boys" more support than in the past. Still, I think I would be concerned about the risk. Here are a few articles on the topic.
