Good on you, man!

I’m not going back to the gym for a while, but after reading some comments here, I think I need to focus on just getting started. Way back after we had a baby, I realized I was so out of shape when I started getting back pain holding my kid (I was 30). I kept telling myself, “Two days a week is fine. Two is more than none.” And I usually did 3, sometimes 4.

And when I fell off the wagon, so to speak, I would tell myself it’s okay, just start again tomorrow. And I eventually would and I’d get back into good habits.

So I’ll try that tomorrow. One workout. And two workouts would be great this week. More than I’m doing now, right?

So someone on here ask me tomorrow night (Wednesday) if I started back. I promise I won’t lie.

See ya then.
PS à @ricd250584 Salut mec! J’aime bien Montréal. C’est une ville superbe. Merci pour le conseil.

I didn't go to the gym this morning for two reasons. One I've got a Dr. appointment and I know that she's going to be drawing blood to check my meds, test, and red blood cell count. Two, I'm friggin sore as all get out. However, if I didn't have to have blood work done today I would've gone.

I certainly felt better for going yesterday. Wore my mask while working out. Noticed that some people aren't wiping down equipment after they finish. I wipe before and after use. Just being precautions.

Like many of the guys on here, I can relate to this.

I used to go to the gym 5 days a week, and did a decent job at working out in my apartment from March-July. Then I lost all motivation to work out by myself in my apartment.

I realised that being part of a community was a big part of why I went to the gym. Working out by myself in the apartment was never going to meet that need. So I decided I had to compromise:
- either work out solo outdoors to feel less claustrophobic, or
- join some online/virtual fitness class that allows me to feel like I’m working out with people who have similar goals.

I ended up finding an outdoor gym that safely and responsibly hosts classes, so luckily both of those needs are being met. The breakthrough came for me when I realised what about working out from home was unappealing, and found a way to address those things.

Hope you get your groove back soon.

I miss my gym a lot. And it was a struggle to stay as fit as I wanted without. That was the first time they shit down. Now, this time, I am doing P90X and it is awesome. Getting in even better shape, and faster, than with the gym. I’ve done it before and it truly produces results if you do the work. I wish I had remembered it when they shut down the first time. Check it out. You’ll love it.

So I did work out yesterday after work. Warmup on our rowing machine. Stretches and yoga exercises to help with my lower back. Then push-ups and crunches. Felt good all night afterward. And then just as I was about to update this thread, the wife got frisky, so it was an extra good day. ;)

Habits and routine are really important to keeping exercise going consistently at home. Also, your environment plays an important role in prompting your brain to do things like exercise.
I'd suggest watching the YouTube video "Lockdown Productivity: Spaceship You" by CGP Grey - which gives a nice explanation/instruction on key ideas for being productive (including actually doing exercise) while being isolated at home.

In my 20s-30s I went to the gym and never really saw much improvement. More of a social time with me and my buddies I think and not enough focus. In my late 30s I got into BeachBody on Demand for at home work outs. When it was just myself I found I could stick to the routine more. When the pandemic hit I blew through P90X3 and am now on Insanity Max :30. Rarely skip a workout since its so easy to just turn on the TV vs. getting into my car and driving to the gym.

Admittedly there is a missing social aspect but as you can tell from above that was a distraction to me.

I really miss my gym. It’s open (for now) but I’m not comfortable going. Probably won’t be until spring or next summer.

I did well working out at home in the warmer weather. Warmup, weights or yoga or the rowing machine. But with the cold weather and teaching all day in our cold and drafty 100 year old house, I feel so cold and stiff by 3:00 that I just haven’t been working out.

Probably doesn’t help that we have a hormonal and pandemic-isolated 13 year old in the house who is requiring a lot of attention from me and my wife right now.

I know motivation is very personal, but I feel myself slipping into some depression-like moods, so I’ll take any suggestions you might have to offer.

TIA
Been lifting /Tai Chi (108 Long ), some Baghua for about 20 years. It's habit. I feel terrible if I miss a day or two but like everything ( imo ) there's cycles. A few weeks killing it, maybe a week not so much due to life etc. While I do sometimes work harder at the gym when inspired by others..I work out for me. Whether it's body weight, dumbbells at home, I do my best to push as hard as I can. Recently put a Marcy smith / rack w/pulleys in my back room and I love it, as good as my old gym workouts. If only my shoulder wasn't tore, had mri this week...I lift through with light weight. It's an addiction...

My gym is open, I've been maybe a handful of times. I can't seem to get motivated to get in there regularly.

Before the pandemic hit I was going 4 to 6 days a wk. I can't seem to get myself motivated to get up and go.

I'm up every morning like always at 3, was usually in the gym by 4. I don't know whether it's the weight I've gained, or the length of time I have not been going regularly. I go to bed with good intentions of going the next morning. But, I get up hem haw around and either end up cooking breakfast or cleaning on the house instead of going on to the gym. My motivation just isn't there. It sucks.

Sometimes..it's like starting over especially after extended periods of downtime. 4 years ago my back went ..bad.. legs went numb, I fell, couldn't walk much for almost 3 months. Long history of neck/low back disc issues. In and out of the hospital, mri's, special xrays, etc, been evading surgery 15 years, until its the very last option. Got up one day, big fucking crack, back felt good. Lost most of my muscle mass, took a few weeks to get a pump back, get the 'habit' on track. Things happen. Something will get you motivated but nothing beats the feeling of muscles building again, just feeling good. And looking good.
Arnold had a quote that helps me when I have a low energy day. Something to the effect that even if you don't kill it, just showing up and lifting 5 lbs is better than nothing.
Hang in there, follow your instincts, when it's right you'll get back at it...

Yeah.... Had shoulder mri...july injury (Harley slipped on gravel, refused to lay down all 750 lbs of it, tore wrist and shoulder. Did NOT drop my baby...) torn rotator, supra spinaceous (spelling...), bone spurs, impingment. Surgery recommended, but I've been getting by with light weights, high reps (really slow to fail). Damn straight it hurts but I'm 'functional'. Wounded, but moving. :)
Surgery? No guarantees..2-3 months downtime. Doc sez leaving it won't cause more damage. Great choices. Soldier on...

I am now on week 7 of my 5 day work out regime from home and I am seeing great results. However, I believe that I could be feeling aches and pain from possible over training. Maybe I need to substitute cardio for one of my lifting days.
Put a Marcy sm 4903 in my back room when it became available. Love it, getting great workouts, also sore. I do something everyday to break it up. MWF I do Golden Ratio workouts, modified (blue star neutraceutical vid). T Thu, Andrei Dieu arms, S 6 exercises, 100 reps, SU bodyweight. Keeps it interesting....and I lift anytime I want. Happy.
I was doing a month of 3 rep Reg Park stuff, month of GVT (10 x 10) , month of hi rep, but the shoulder has made heavies impossible. Not happy...

GVT aka German Volume is grueling but awesome. Made some of my best muscle mass gains on that in my 20's

5x5 is great too. Especially for at-home training, both GVT and 5x5 dont require u to do a bunch of exercises or switch weights. Thats the one thing that sucks if u try doing bodybuilding routines at home, hell u expend more energy just loading and unloading weights than u do actually doing your sets lol. Just one exercise per bodypart so its convenient during this time.

Been looking to buy a bench I cant handle Planet fitness, its mobbed n the drive n vibe just. ugh. lol I was spoiled having 2 gyms within 5 mins of me lol. I cant believe the prices of weight benches right now
And fuckin' weights! Used to be around $1 to 1.50 a lb. I see ripoff ads online...2 20 lb dumbells, $120! A Dicks set (7' olympic, 300 lbs I believe), normally 299.00 (but rarely available), craigslist, 750.00 and up. There will always be those that take advantage. Rogue, Rep...big increase. I need a better bar and some weights.. can't justify and hope it goes down as supply returns.

Ugh.
Sorry, man.
When gyms were closed here, we had to do what many others did.... We found weights and other equipment & made do at home.
It's not the same. It would be close to impossible to make it the same.
The energy, the feel...

But, after thinking about what we did & what could make the experience better, here are a few ideas...
If you are lucky enough to have a dedicated space for your stuff, give it the look of a gym. Like back when you were a kid and worked out at home.
Set up music. Old school boom box, iPod, Alexa, whatever. Put together a playlist.
Give the space a look...
Posters, magazine articles, workout guides, motivational stuff, supplement companies you like, whatever...
Lastly, do your best to keep the area separate from the rest of your day. Try and keep it as it's own "thing" , so it feels like you're going to an area that's detached from your home life, even if it's only psychologically.

@Snarky_succubus wound up designing, building, and decorating her own deadlift platform.

If it's the social aspect that's still lacking for you, look around on the different social media platforms and find a group in a similar situation. (There should be plenty).

Join up. Share workouts. Set goals. Share progress pics.

Like I said, it's almost impossible to get an exact copy of the gym experience... But, you can get closer than you think if you try.

Hope this helps.
Good luck!

Perfect advice brother. If u got a spare room just turn it into a gym, the posters, like u said, hot chicks, guys whatever you're into. Famous powerlifters bodybuilders etc.... thats how i started as a teen. You nailed it, make it "detached". Blast that music or even your fave podcasts whatever. shit I used to lift with porn playing lol. It motivated me "If i get jacked enuff i could bang a broad like that etc lol" To me I'm kinda trying to shift the mindset into being a motivated younger version of myself. The gyms are open here but hearing from some gym employee friends of mine they expect em to be closed down again soon. But jeez the price of equipment is thru the roof now, I dont wanna have to take a second mortgage to buy weights lol
