Are Guys More Comfortable Naked In The Locker Room Than They Used To Be?

That was my story too, except I didn't get that good advice so I had to figure this out later in life.

Although for all the jeers of calling me a fag those "straight" boys sure loved staring at my cock when it got the least bit chubby in the high school locker room.

Yeah those guys all came around. It was a lot more fun when we were all into circle jerking and cum contests.

This is not exactly an original thought, but I'm pretty sure a guy's need/desire (especially a young guy's) to:
1. get off on a regular basis
2. enjoy NON-sexual skin contact with other guys
3. be naked ... a lot
all function separately from and independently of sexual orientation.

I remember reading in psychology (anthropology?) classes back in the 80's that in many cultures it is/was thought rather strange if an unmarried man (especially a young one) did NOT engage in sexual activities with other unmarried men of the same age. Also, doing so was NOT regarded as any kind of indication of sexual orientation. I can't help but wonder if 'western' societies would be a lot calmer if they held the same view.

What an awesome idea. Why did no-one think of this before? Saves on installation, maintenance, space, water. Promotes better hygiene. Brilliant.

Anyone come across any of these?

Most of what I've read about these comes directly or indirectly from either pro-'green' sources or from plumbing companies so I'm pretty sure the information is biased. That said, I've noticed two themes pretty consistently in everything I've read about these and waterless urinals in private homes:
1. Nearly all cases of waterless urinals being smelly are a result of improper maintenance.
2. Guys pretty universally think both are a great idea and women pretty universally do not.

An interesting day in the locker room at my university yesterday. Usually the young men walk to and from the showers with a towel around their waists. Not yesterday. Saw a couple of students walking bare ass naked down the long aisle from their lockers to the showers.

It depends on the region and upbringing.
Here in the West and other westernized places people are more open minded towards full nudity on locker rooms.
But once during an interview, a Brazilian soccer player said that when he was in a team in some muslim country, his team mates, all muslims, complained and protested just because he went nude from his locker to the shower and back.

Also there's a short movie where a French guy is completely nude all the time in the locker room, and a muslim starts complaining.
So, as I said before, it depends on some factors.

Religion is responsible for the majority of woes down through the centuries, yet everybody is supposed to wet their pants and get all pious because someone claims "religion" as the reason for being hidebound. That's backwards.

If one's religion gives one so much strength, why isn't that support enough? Why does one need to ruin the fun for everybody else by making them conform to the edicts of that particular religion?

If a religion teaches that we are somehow dirty simply for existing, then it's not worth my attention.

You should wash your hands BEFORE you piss so that ALL of your body stays clean.

I read this somewhere and a few months ago a few friends mentioned the same thing. Assuming a guy takes a shower in the morning, when he takes a leak he's actually more likely to pick something up than spread something he has. Therefore if you could only wash your hands ONCE, it's actually healthier from a disease control perspective to wash BEFORE taking a leak. In the real world before AND after is best

I can only speak for the Netherlands but I think that after a wave of modesty guys are more open (at least in my gym).

The muslim guys are overly shy and toweldance but the rest if the guys are pretty open. I would define these types:

- the superopen ones
- the ones doing the normal ‘towel to dry and waist’ thing
- the ones that go to and from the shower wearing underwear but who are afraid to show when it comes to it (grabbing their towels or undies being uncovered)
- the toweldancers

Younger guys are a little insecure but I saw a lot becoming less paranoid. I guess it has more to do with ‘am I instagrammable enough?’ than the gay thing: especially guys in their 20’s have no issues being naked with gay guys here.

The typical caucasian and afro-american guys have the least issues from a cultural point of view. Especially when they played soccer.

The Koran teaches men should in presence of others be covered between navel and knees except when doinking the wife. But this modesty even among Muslims is not universal. South Asian Muslims and Turks tend to be less modest than Arabs.

A younger 20 year old or so guy was in the communal shower today, which was different because it's usually us older 30+ dudes who use them instead of the stalls. I was in a good mood from my workout so I said "How's it going?" and made small talk with him about how he was new to the gym, about the weather, and how I wasn't ready for the work week to start again, the usual nonsense. As we were chatting, I noticed he took a peak down below and quickly looked away at the floor, and for a moment it made me a little uncomfortable but only because he was uncomfortable. I was aware that I was hanging heavier than usual because I was in the sauna for 20 minutes, but I wasn't sporting a chub or anything.

So rather than be awkward, I proceeded to scrub my face, beard and hair vigorously so my eyes were closed and then gave myself a good rinse before opening them again. Anyhow, that was my good dead for the day, I really wanted to establish that there is nothing weird about nudity in the locker room and that if he wanted to look, it was fine with me, otherwise I wouldn't have spent a couple of minutes with my eyes closed right next to him. We small talked some more as we got dressed and I could tell he was much more at ease by the time I left.

I've been having a 'heated debate' with some online and in real life friends recently about communal gym showers. Some guys are just shy and prefer not to be seen nude, some don't care and don't mind being seen nude in the showers. One of them, who is pretty much a naturist (and gay) anyway, is no longer using open showers because he's worried about guys 'perving' over him or looking at him in a way that is not appropriate for that sort of situation. I mean how would you know if someone is looking at you unless you're looking at them?

It's a shame he feels he has to change his behaviour for something that may or may not happen. Personally, I don't care - if someone is looking at me in the shower for a bit too long, I could take that as a compliment I suppose. I don't let it change my behaviour. I prefer open showers for a few reasons anyway - most cubicles are too small to move around properly and I just like showering with other guys - it helps me with my body confidence even though I'm a chunky hairy bear and not a hung ripped muscle boy.

How do you guys feel about communal showers in gyms? If there was a choice of cubicles or open, what would you choose? Would it make a difference if you were working out with a buddy? I know some guys are at ease naked with total strangers but would use cubicles if they were with a friend or co-worker.

Have you ever noticed anyone perving at you and/or confronted them about it?

I would

I chose open showers over cubicles all the time : they're free quicker, are cleaner, you can keep chatting with your buddy or borrow soap from your neighbour, and nobody leaves dirty sweaty disgusting underwear like in cubicles ;)

For me I’ve always chosen the open showers. More space, more relaxing and can chat to guys when showering. I do get what you mean about showering with strangers or mates. However it’s only really the first time you shower naked with someone you know that could potentially be a bit awkward. However most of my mates we have all seen each other naked loads of times and there’s no issue. Generally it’s what you make of the situation if you act awkward then it will be awkward. If you just relax the other guy tends to follow your behaviour.

I will always choose open showers - like you've said, more room and they are generally cleaner too (fewer surfaces to wipe down). I used to work out with a close mate years ago and it was shower cubicles. One day we chose a different location and didn't know until it was too late that it was open showers. He told me to go first, but told him don't be silly, we were bound to be naked at some point in the gym so I just said to 'get over it' - we both went in naked to the showers together. After that, it wasn't an issue and we stayed with that gym as it was more fun to shower naked beside each other. It never got weird between us which was even better.

That’s great to hear, I find it brings you closer as mates. Once you have showered naked side by side there aren’t many more barriers between you when you both know what the other guy is like naked. The conversation gets easier too the more times you do it and as someone else said, sharing shower gel, chatting away, showering thoroughly including your dick and not struggling to keep yourselves covered up etc makes the whole thing easier and more relaxing

Ive known guys who would readily get in a shower full of guys from other teams he didn't know, then shy away from it when it was just his team. Then i have known guys who had a blast showering with their own team but are scared to death of a communal shower if other teams are in it.
I think its cool either way.

I used to fear nudity with people I knew too. Like many said here, it's just a matter of being "brave" for the first 10 seconds and then it's just business as usual.

And yes, naked time is a bonding experience between guys. You share a moment of trust and confidence.

I used to be terrified of being naked in front of other guys, but ended up going to a proper turkish bath/spa with a guy I used to work with many years ago. It was men only the day we went and we were in swimming trunks. After being there for about 30 mins, it dawned on us we were the only ones NOT naked and were the odd ones out. The trunks came off and we made more trips there after that and never brought our trunks after that. I've been there with gay and straight mates and it was great just hanging out naked, being social with them and enjoying the place.

as an older guy i was taking showers in middle school and got used to it fast not a big deal i see lots of younger guys that dont take showers at my gym at all and heard a few say i wish they would cover up i dont want to see there cocks .
