I understand the predatory vibe though..I think because men specifically have such a predilection towards adaptation, there's a collective understanding that a predatory man is always looking for ways to overstep barriers and gain access and not be questioned, all of which are privileges society grants to men in authority or in trusted positions. Priests and teachers aren't inherently predatorial; the predators seek out these positions to gain their accesses. Same could be said for police, coaches, politicians, etc.
The beard on a man is no different from the mane of a lion in a sense, or the plumage on a bird; virility, authority, and experience all rolled up into one, so it makes sense many predatory men consciously or subconsciously adopt it as part of their image as it serves their purposes.
Can happen to almost anyone or anything...look at how we view the ultimate symbol of utilitarian normalcy, the windowless panel van.
