Buying A Porn Mag

Old skool I know, but who has bought a porn mag before? I did when i was young before I had the internet, I went to a local newsagents, hurriedly picked up a couple of porn mags then a Loaded or FHM or something to hide them under, the girl at the desk too ages to put them through then put the regular mag at the bottom of the pile. There were two other people behind me in the queue which was rather embarrassing!

I went back a couple of times later and oddly found it a bit of a turn on buying hem, knowing that she would know exactly what I'd be up to later! Still I'm glad we don't have to do that now!

One of my first jobs was behind the counter of a local pharmacy selling and restocking candy, snacks and magazines. We carried Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler and a couple of the offshoot Penthouse publications (Letters, Variations, etc.) The porn was kept separately behind the pharmacy counter.

I looked forward to working Saturdays when the weekend pharmacist—a semi-retired guy with a great sense of humor—took advantage of downtime to flip through the latest issues. He'd bring them over to show me his favorite photos, usually the most provocative ones in Hustler. There was no internet back then and I hadn't before seen pics of couples having actual sex (just the regular playboy pinup images.) Being the only pharmacy in town, it was also the center of town gossip. It was quite the learning experience as a teenager. One fun memory was cleaning up old samples in the basement with the pharmacist. I came across a stack of really old mags but even funner than that was a display board of diaphragms in different sizes. We took them off the display and played "frisbee" with them across the basement storage room.

Coming of age in the Midwest in the offline, pre-VCR late 70s/early 80s, magazines were about it. They were openly sold at convenience stores. Never really felt too self-conscious buying them.

When I was an 18-year-old senior in high school back in 2010, I bought a Playboy's Nudes Magazine at the airport on my way to boys' boarding school. I shared the magazine with my school friends that lived in the dorm with me when I got back to the boys' dorm at the boarding school.
I was so excited when I bought the magazine. I had one of the most intense erections in my life (up to that time) when I was buying the magazine, and I wasn't wearing any underwear under my jeans. The middle-aged lady from whom I bought the magazine at the airport convenient store looked quite uncomfortable when she was ringing up my purchase. I had a friend in college (circa 1988 to 1992) who had a whole closetful of porn magazines. Naturally there was Playboy and Penthouse, but he had magazines that were second, third and tenth tier on the glamour magazine skin-rag scale. Off-hand I remember titles like High Society and Nugget with some really horrid centerfolds with imperfections that no amount of lighting and makeup could compensate for.

After I graduated from college I lost contact with him, but he should have saved some of those 1970s and 80s back issues he bought from a used bookstore in Hollywood. He owned issues of Club International with Long Dong Silver, Texas Longhorn and a rarely named member of the third-legged team, the man with the MX Missile. In his porn collection was an issue of Oui with actress Demi Moore as a young nude model, a huge shaggy bush pointed right at the camera. I wonder what all that porn would be worth today?
