His Dad played football before launching a very successful business career.

His brother played college ball and was in the NFL for 4 years before getting out.

Carl's family is very wealthy. He doesn't need to play for the money. He's smart to get out while he's young, before his brain is damaged further and while his knees still work. He's been planning this and he started a company around the time that he came out, so that he has something to move on to in his next career.
