I think he's just facing very tough opposition this year and everyone he is up against are industry veterans and are in films that are going to gest best picture nominations. He would've been nominated in other years, this year just has a lot of depth.

Since it is easier to get a Globe nomination because the category is broken down in to Comedy and Drama, there can be more nominees. Also, the event the movie is loosely based on, the young male participant who Melton plays has said he feels he is not taken seriously and the movie overlooked the pedophilia could have also been a deciding factor. No organization wants to look like it is unaware of or promoting pedophilia.

I didn't jinx anything. The votes were already done so I guess no prayers could have saved him. Did anyone even say any?!

I don't know what else he could have done because his film was on Netflix which certainly helps, he was effective at campaigning, and his movie/performance got love by the critics and by most people who saw it.

So tough break on missing out on the SAG, BAFTA, and very likely now the Oscar nomination in 12 days...

The voting period is from today to January 16th so maybe this SAG snub of his will motivate some to rank him higher up because he certainly needs # 1 votes to sneak in like other SAG/BAFTA snubbed actors.

A surprise Oscar nomination can still happen it is just unlikely. Regina King and Kristen Stewart overcame it though and Regina even WON the Best Supporting Oscar the year SAG and BAFTA played games with her so who knows.

If anything this film performance should still majorly boost his reputation in the industry and lead to many more auditions/roles getting handed to him outright.
