That's not weird! Feel what you feel as a viewer, it's as valid as anything!
And obviously everything from the writing to the direction to the acting performance is meant to elicit contradictory and sympathetic-yet-distasteful feelings about that character (or many of the characters on the show). The Monty character to me is quite the tragic figure - barely able to accept himself because of the overwhelmingly, toxic masculinity manly-man culture he's existing in (athletes), lashing out against those parts of himself that he hates by brutally taking it out on others, miserable home life, etc. Seeing him "soften" a bit with the boyfriend character after he sees him taking pictures at the game was a nice evolution of that character from the first, violent outcome and I had some hope for him; even that he could turn into a nicer guy once he started accepting parts of himself. But the ultimate "tragic figure" thing about his character is as we learn what happened to him.
