Coast Guardsman William E. Leonard, machinist's mate second class, earned his bottle of beer. The beer was passed out on the beach of Guadalcanal. Coast Guardsman Leonard, serving on an assault transport, had participated in seven invasions; North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Kwajalein and Eniwetok in the Marshalls, Aitape in Dutch New Guinea, and the Admiralties. Leonard's only comment between gulps was: "It's a long time between beers." IMG_7973.jpeg

1900s Christy Mathews photograph. Christy Mathewson is remembered as one of baseball's first true superstars and one of the greatest pitchers in the history of the sport. Known for his exceptional control, poise, and mastery of the fadeaway pitch (now known as the screwball), Mathewson was a dominant force for the New York Giants in the early 20th century, winning 373 games and leading the team to a World Series title in 1905. His integrity, sportsmanship, and clean-cut image helped elevate the public's perception of baseball, contributing to its growth as America's pastime. Mathewson's enduring legacy as a pioneer of pitching excellence and a role model for athletes was solidified with his induction into the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.

Wiki: "Mathewson was a devout Christian and never pitched on Sunday"

So most likely, he disdained (or even hated) our LGBT Community...like the majority of people in this era, lol

You really can't apply contemporary values to people of the past. They will almost always come up short.

He was a handsome one!
The character in Breakfast at Tiffany's was supposed to be gay, based off Capote himself. They got Peppard because they needed a man for Holly Golightly to get married in order for the movie to even be made. In the movie he's a gigolo who gets rent and clothes paid for whenever he sleeps with a rich woman.

So, both the male and the female leads were miscast in the film. I learned not too long ago that Capote was unhappy with the studio's decision to give the role of Holly Golightly to Audrey Hepburn. He is said to have preferred that it be given to Marilyn Monroe.
