The character in Breakfast at Tiffany's was supposed to be gay, based off Capote himself. They got Peppard because they needed a man for Holly Golightly to get married in order for the movie to even be made. In the movie he's a gigolo who gets rent and clothes paid for whenever he sleeps with a rich woman.
So, both the male and the female leads were miscast in the film. I learned not too long ago that Capote was unhappy with the studio's decision to give the role of Holly Golightly to Audrey Hepburn. He is said to have preferred that it be given to Marilyn Monroe.

A remarkable magazine announcement from Boxoffice magazine for Paul Schrader's American Gigolo, proudly hailing John Travolta, hot off his performances in the films Grease and Saturday Night Fever, as the lead of the upcoming film. However, this casting proved to not be in the cards, with Travolta stepping away in 1979 and thus paving the way for Richard Gere's star-making role.
