Yeah I saw this on Reddit earlier. People are out of their minds. A ticket to a play does not include a meet-and-greet with actors, just because fans swarm stage doors like assholes and it's hard to prevent.

Joe's very kind for even bothering to reply to this nonsense. Or his PR team asked him to, since the reality for celebs these days is that a non-issue can turn into a dumb controversy if people on X decide to have a tantrum.

I'm a performer as well and it is expected. Fans wait at the stage entrance every night, and while you don't have to acknowledge them all individually, he shouldn't ignore them.

Much respect to you and your profession!

You're right that he shouldn't ignore them, but maybe we have a societal issue with fans expecting too much from entertainers. It's very hard for me to sympathize with them.

If you have the energy to do this after an exhausting performance every night (idk if yours involves singing/dancing), then I admire that. But it seems really wrong to expect every performer to have the mental energy to do that, and act like that's an inherent part of the job.

It's SUCH a competitive atmosphere as-is - will casting start to take into account whether a potential choice will also be able to interact with fans after the shows, on top of their actual abilities to perform? Maybe they already do! That must narrow casting choices down even more.

But dude, I just don't think you are a monkey or a pet for the fans to fawn over. I think you're a person. I wish things were different.

Amen. This entitlement from "fans" both in entertainment and the porn audience is out of control quite frankly.

It’s not like he’s ignoring them. He smiles, waves, says hi. What else do you expect from him?

Your right, it's definitely not fair and I have come off stage exhausted, disappointed etc. But it doesn't change the fact that it is expected. In a lot of the Productions I've been part of I've been a supporting cast member so I'm often not absolutely swarmed by fans. I have watched the old pros do their thing however and often time a group acknowledgement and an explanation can really calm the waters. "Thank you all for coming, I really appreciate it. Forgive me I have another show tomorrow and I'm exhausted so I won't be hanging around."

The stars of Heartstopper have already spent a couple years dealing with parasocial fans who feel entitled to their time and attention, who obsessively analyze their behavior while judging their private lives and who speak with unearned authority about their personal and sexual agency.

Joe has been more than tolerant of these people. They can suck it if some nights he's too tired to stand around shaking hands on a cold February night in New York.

Entitlement is the key word.
It perfectly covers the fans and creators of a show he's currently working very hard to break away from ;)
Having other work is apparently "working very hard to get away from" in your parasocial relationship with Joe. Please get over yourself

it’s similar to what joe said in the vogue interview though. probably not “working very hard” but he definitely wants to distance himself sometimes from it. IMG_0840.jpeg

You should learn to read and not just stare at pictures on here.
He's given multiple interviews where he's said he's keen to move on from Heartstopper and that he found elements of the fanbase hard.
You're probably one of them.

There's a considerable difference between being weary of the HS fans and hating the show and dying to escape it. Nuance is key. For example, your repeated insistence that famous actor Connor Jessup who had several hit shows and films before befriending the cast of HS is a 'social climber'.
