The source material is still being written. It was supposed to end on the 5th book until last year before its release when it was announced to end I. The 6th which has yet to get an official release date announced. I know they’re close to the end of it from the we room posts online though, so I’m willing to be they’re just waiting to announce the renewal until they can pair it’s publicity with the final book tour. Believe me, the tour events and book signings have also sold out large venues. Netflix will still get their Pennie’s back on a final season, and the cast clearly love each other IRL and would love to complete the project togetherI think if it was, they'd have struck while the iron was hot and extended their contracts after the success of the first season.

Both of the lead actors spent ALOT more time promoting their other projects than they did the last series of HS, which fell well below expectations in terms of hours viewed... it had it's moment, things move on.
