it frustrates me to see stuff like "casting has to match the character". Yes, it is good to see queer characters played by actors who understand what the characters are feeling on a personal level, but to quote Sir Laurence Olivier, "have you tried acting"? It just feels like moves like this will make it harder for LGBTQ actors to play straight characters.
I don't wanna turn this into a fight thread so I'm just gonna leave the one comment, but gay actors already barely ever get to play straight characters. There are no A-list gay actors, and I think in recent years gay people have proved to be able to make people quite famous. I for one would've preferred an actual gay person got the career that Timothee Chalamet or Josh O'Connor is having because of the roles they played in a gay film. I respect your opinion, but I would just look at how many gay films have all straight casts and take that into account (Brokeback Mountain, CMBYN, Love Simon, Moonlight, God's Own Country and The Power of the Dog)

I 100% agree, its about having equal opportunity and its almost never the case where gay actors play straight! Its very cool that Jon Bailey plays straight in Bridgerton buts its rare! So like can Queer actors at least get queer role!

tbh I will be disapointed if Kit (and Joe Locke also) are not LGBT+.. would kill a bit of the magic of the show for me

I hate to stereotype but in an interview they said their fav artists are adele and taylor swift so I think there's a good chance they are part of the community

Definitely not trying to start a fight and I appreciate your perspective. As you say, it's already hard for openly queer actors to get roles as straight characters, and there are still many actors/entertainers endlessly speculated on this site as being in the closet, glass or not, in order to preserve their ability to get work.

I applaud Heartstopper for fearlessly pursuing representation in their cast, my only concern is that openly calling for casting to match character will give license to the loudest and nastiest voices on the other side to call for all straight characters to be played by straight actors and make it even harder for queer actors to play straight characters, while having no effect on the ability of cishet actors to get queer roles. And that's not the fault of anyone who worked on Heartstopper, it's just a general concern about the relationship between the LGBTQ community and the entertainment industry.

I know trying to have a serious conversation on this site is generally a fruitless effort but I genuinely appreciate your contribution :)

I personally disagree. Straight actors are still the norm and have such a wide array of casting opportunities compared to queer people. I think queer roles should go to queer people because they already rarely get opportunities for being openly queer. I think what we need more of is more unapologetic queer creatives who aren’t afraid to cast queer people and go against homophobic hollywood.

Also I might add that casting queer people for queer roles goes a long way in regards to representation especially for queer people growing up. It feels good to be SEEN and relate to a character. Also shows that queer people can get famous regardless of being queer.

I do see your perspective though, but that made up scenario shouldn’t stop the progress we’re making.

So, the main thrust of what I said had to do with queer actors getting straight roles, so you're disagreeing with things I didn't say.

From what I can see it doesn't sound like you guys are disagreeing much, just giving some different context and nuance

I was not trying to start a fight with you or put words in your mouth. I literally addressed that in what I said. Mama lets read since we wanna be a little condescending. You say you applaud queer ppl getting queer roles, but made up this little scenario in your head that somehow that this will make the homophobic voices louder. Regardless of what queer people do homophobes will scream and yell. You say this will give them ammo to only want straight people to play straight roles, but thats already happening is it not? Straights playing straight roles and gay roles… im just saying queer people already get fewer roles as it is, so why not cast them in queer roles.

Bridgerton is just one example of a queer person getting a straight role. I truly hope this is a turning point for queer people getting more casting opportunities.

In short I’m not trying to fight you lmao im just saying why shouldn’t we advocate for queer ppl to play queer roles, homophobes will be mad regardless of what role a gay person plays.

Honestly: I‘m not sure if that really is true as I didn‘t find anything on the Internet about it. Still Hope so

doesn’t necessarily mean every casting decision is 1:1, but it strongly implies that at least the majority of the cast correlate or are close to their characters in how they identify

True! I really don't care if he's gay or not. If he's gay, good for him (and for us). If not, it doesn't effect my life at all.

On another note, I've never read the books or heard about it until the series came out. I think Tao is gay, right? He acts so gay. Isaac could also be gay... idk

The show is sooooooo good! So sweet! It's a feel-good show. I'm sure Netflix will renew for a second season!
Is a comic book

Wentworth Miller
Connor W Jessup
Myles Heizer
Russell Tovey
Brandon Lynn
Robin Lord Taylor

All of them gay/bi actors who had always played straight characters, and just 2 of them played LGBT characters in recently years.
