Mike White did a really good job in the script of steering us away from thinking this would be the scenario. Which in hindsight was a tough task, considering how obvious it would be to jump to the conclusion that he was an escort given the objective evidence (rich older gay guys traveling with a hot young guy).
I think you are confusing what would be better for the actor and what would be better for the character. Leo is young, brash and without any sense of style...so the underwear they chose for him was 100% perfect. Now, would Leo look better in a simple pair of Calvin's? Of course.
