I grew up not knowing anything about men liking men. We swam in the creek nude. Some YMCAs did not use bathing suits. We peed in urinals that were draughs. It was the usual and the common.
I wonder if it were not the rise of men "coming out" and then some of them cruising public facilities that brought about dividers and some of the things that "protect" the innocent. It may have been the awareness of HIV and AIDS.
All I know is today men are much more uptight than they used to be.
In the past, guys grew up taking showers at school, and a lot of workplaces (especially factories, mines, and military locations) had post-work showers. Society wasn't as sex-saturated, while today nudity is almost always portrayed in popular culture as a sexual overture.
