Naked men were just that - men who were naked. They were not sex objects in the way that naked or semi-naked women would be.
I've always thought it was peculiar that in our society, women had to keep their breasts and nipples covered, because showing them would be arousing to men.

However, if a gay man can be aroused by the sight of a shirtless man, isn't that shirtless man just as arousing to a woman?

Yet, there is no taboo against shirtless men. Men can bare it all, but women have to be covered. Strange double standard.

Might be a double standard, but I am glad it works in my favor. I like seeing bare chested guys!

They killed the movement because they felt it was dirty and wrong to be naked around your own sex. If you look at society now a days most folks are shy and ashamed to be naked with there fellow brothers. When you think about it from a logical point were men we all have penis and balls it no big deal. Back then we use to have communal showers not this silly booth where you hide like a little scaredy cat. Since woman have become dominant part of society they feel the need to emasculate their men. Its really sad when I see how men are now looking and smelling like overly groomed woman..

I agree. Feminism and the gay rights movement killed this. I don't understand how exactly.

I see it differently. I think that it used to be a proof that you were straight man if you were able to be naked in a male locker room without getting a hard on.

Now, it appears that you are gay if you are the only one comfortable being naked in a locker room.

Yes, that's how my generation saw it as well.

The exception being sports teams. Oh, also, Asian men.

how many closeted men were jacking to those picture in life magazine back in the 40s/50s?

they didn't have LPSG to see male nudity and nice cocks. i'll bet a lot of semen was spilled on those magazines.
