I love the California Legion of Honor. Funded by the infamous Elma Spreckles. Read her autobiography if you get a chance called “Big Elma”.View attachment 159179781
Hercules fighting the Hydra.
A small statue in silver in the collection of the California Legion of Honor, San Francisco.
Alma Spreckles was indeed a famous libertine, who posed nude for the statue of Nike, Godess of Victory, at the top of the column in Union Square. She was 6 feet tall, but she didn't scare Adolph Spreckles. He was the real original "Sugar Daddy" ~so named by Alma. 24 years younger, Alma bore him three children.I love the California Legion of Honor. Funded by the infamous Elma Spreckles. Thanks for correcting my spelling of her first name. Wow that is interesting. The book is an interesting read. She was a great “doer” of things. She usually got what she wanted including putting the California Palace of the Legion of Honor right where she wanted on the existing golf course.Alma Spreckles was indeed a famous libertine, who posed nude for the statue of Nike, Godess of Victory, at the top of the column in Union Square. She set the stage for how a "trophy" wife could really shake things up when, as a widow, she was in charge of a large fortune.

The best view of the statue is from Macy's terrace, where there was a "Cheescake Factory", not sure if it's still there.
Macy's Union Square will be closing soon, when they find a buyer for the real estate.
