Michael Cimino (actor)

Via MTV:

Though he is straight, Cimino has been a lifelong ally to the LGBTQ+ community, and he has become especially sympathetic to the unique hardships it faces since learning of a close cousin’s difficult coming-out experience.

“I remember him telling me that, when he first came out, how hard it was for him, and how he felt a lot of people viewed him differently,” he says. “He was scared.” Today, that cousin often visits Cimino in California, and when the trailer for Love, Victor was released, they watched it together. “I was, of course, freaking out, because I didn't see the trailer before it came out,” Cimino says. “He was sitting next to me, and I was too busy freaking out to notice that he was crying.” That emotional moment confirmed for Cimino that his decision to portray Victor was the right one.

How Love, Victor Helped Michael Cimino Find His Political Voice

Yeah I think he is just a straight guy who treats us how we want to be treated, ya know. And that doesn't happen all of the time and i think the cynics in us turn that into us believing that he could be bi.

At the end of the day, Cimino says he is straight. There is no reason for him to lie. We should move on from discussing his sexuality or even doubting it because it doesn't help us. Let's be gracious about the amazing support he gives us as a straight man and enjoy is body too lmfao.

I thought he was gay.

Knowing he’s straight changed my opinion of Love, Victor. As great as an actor as he is, I don’t understand why they couldn’t have gone for an actual gay guy. If they’re going for representation, they should’ve gone all the way.

Yeah I agree. It's getting a little old having straight people play gay roles. I don't blame the actors though. Like Nick Robinson, he has a heartfelt reason to playing the role, but still. It seems that gay roles are less for inclusiveness and more for heterosexual comfort.

it's funny that Mason is the only one pretty open about his sexuality (his last relationship was with a guy) and his character on the show is currently straight.

So, using the logic that gay should play gay, should Mason have been recast?

I understand the logic behind trans actors playing trans (because men have historically played trans women, and this has given off the nonsense impression - to some - that trans women are not "real" women), but that logic doesn't - usually - work with playing gay. Proof is in how many thought Michael was gay.

where did you get info about his last relationship

if you've been following him for awhile like before the show came out he definitely dropped some hints but he pretty much confirmed it in a recent post where he talks about his tattoos and one of them being dedicated to his "ex-partner" and it was a Frank Ocean song. It all should be in his thread.

The problem here is that LGBTQ+ actors are always being snubbed just because of their sexuality, while cisgender straight people never face that. So cishet people playing LGBTQ+ roles is denying actual LGBTQ+ people a chance, whereas an LGBTQ+ person playing a straight role does not rob straight people of anything—straight people can still play straight roles in any other work without being subjected to sexuality-based prejudice. So no, Mason should not have been recast.

how many openly gay actors auditioned for the role of Victor?

Sorry not sorry but there are plenty of gay actors, hell even a bi guy would be better then just casting a straight guy, it's annoying at this point.

If you want to make a gay show cast a freaking gay actor, it's really not that complicated. And don't come at me with the limited pool of actors crap, he's a Latino gay, they aren't rare lol.

I can't say I've done the research to know but the parameters of the casting lists dictates who they look at, if you make it clear from the jump that the role is looking for a gay person, there would be a lot more people who will audition. Seems pretty clear to me that they really didn't try all that hard to find a gay actor tbh.
