Open Showers

I had my first open shower experience when I was 18. Still to this day, 25 years later, I don't know why it happened but I'm glad it did.
I went to meet my mother and brother at the rental condo they were vacationing at, it was a relatively new and upscale complex and I was only there to use the pool. I met my mother and brother already in the pool and told them I just needed to put my suit on, the pool was relatively busy with probably 10 family's swimming. As I entered the locker room I was actually surprised to see a large open shower room with shower heads along all 3 walls and no individual stalls. The layout in such a new facility surprised me and brought back the fear of open showers that had bothered me the entire summer before high school. While my school did have new gang showers, I found out they were never used, which quenched that fear.
After finding an available locker I quickly changed into my suit while I had the entire room to myself. I was never afraid of nudity, but because I am both un-cut (I had never seen another un-cut cock in the very few nude situations I had ever been in) and am a massive grower appearing quite small flaccid I tried to limit or prevent my time exposed to others. Suit on I headed towards the pool, as I once again passed the empty shower room I'm not sure what made me do it. I looked in and thought to myself, "you are supposed to shower before swimming" maybe part of me wanted to feel exposed, but I just stripped off my trunks and hung them with my towel at the entry way a proceeded to a shower head on the back wall. After turning on the water and starting to shower I realized that I was nude, about 15 feet from my towel with no where to hide.
And just then it happened, I heard the locker room door closing and I knew whoever was coming in would see me nude. As I watched the hallway to see who was entering, hoping to see my brother, I was horrified to see a young boy with his father peering in on me as they walked by, I turned to face the wall and finish my shower. As i exited to grab my suit I heard the little boy asking his father why that man didn't have any clothes on?
Even though I was shocked by strangers I realized it was no big deal to be nude in front of strangers in appropriate situations. As I have matured I now care very little that I may look different because of my foreskin, and have taken several opportunities to get nude in public.

I’m only 20 and perfectly comfortable naked in locker rooms and showers so I guess I buck the trend.

Granted, I have been into nudism for a couple of years so I’m hardly bothered by nudity. But way before then, when I was pretty prudish, I was still never bothered by being naked in a locker room - it’s designed for you to be naked in and to shower in. I’d always just strip naked and shower without a second thought - that’s the natural thing to do - and would never bother with the towel dance or what is perhaps the strangest one, showering in shorts or underwear.

I think it’s healthy for there to be a space where nakedness isn’t a big deal for a couple of minutes and it’s a shame it seems to be dying out according to this thread.

However, I have to say, there are still more naked people than towel dancers when I go to change before and after swimming. It may be something to do with the fact guys in their early 20s frequent the gym less and tend to be shyer but by the time you hit your late twenties / thirties I think you’re far more likely to not care about getting naked (this is anecdotal from both nudism and using locker rooms).

As I say, I’ve always been naked in locker rooms - maybe this is something to do with the fact I’m a nudist now and so always had it in me to not really give a shit about who sees me naked. It’s been suggested a couple of times that hung guys are more comfortable naked around other guys and I am pretty big myself so I guess that figures, but I just don’t buy that. If you’re uncomfortable being naked then surely it doesn’t matter what you’re packing, you’re still uncomfortable being unclothed? Nakedness is more than just your dick and I’ve seen plenty of guys who aren’t hung who just grasp that ultimately it doesn’t matter what you’ve got or what you look like, we all have bodies and it’s easier to just shower the normal way ‍♂️

Great shower and did you notice those nice tall urinals?
I live in a all male dorm at college which was built in the early 1900's. The boys bathroom on my floor looks just like this one. Open showers, tall urinals with no dividers and a row of sinks and stalls. Great male bonding to say the least. I am Latino and uncut with a hoodie!!

That is the way all the dorms were up to the 80's / 90's -

There were no private showers and no one expected them.

We would stand in the shower chatting away and nobody thought anything about the fact we were naked - you saw everyone on your floor naked at some point.

Yeah...here we are in 2023 and some dorms still have the same bathroom equipment of the past. I feel so lucky!!

Nowadays the design goal is "privacy and security". On the surface it seems like a good idea but if you dig a little deeper you can see how this fosters the opposite. Craving into your anxieties is typically not a good thing.

Thank god your generalization is false in most cases as I continue enjoying discovering new communal showers in the US on a weekly basis and just did yesterday

Woodlands YMCA, Shadowbend location ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
[20 mins north of IAH; Houston]

When I have a long layover, I jump in a uber
& head here to use the dry sauna, large hot tub
and showers.

This location & the downtown Dallas Y are my 2 favorite TX locations
(‘which are both ALWAYS busy with guys of all ages).

I like your healthy perspective towards nakedness .......................

I was never embaressed about being totally naked in communal gym experiences; to me I had many comfortable conversations with other guys post a workout.

I got into nudism in 2017 and haven't looked back since I made my decision to start going to nudist resorts. As I tell people who are quite often surprised that I do nudism, I tell them it is not sexual; it is about openness. I have always found fellow nudists to be very social and willing to start discussions with strangers. It is as though all the barriers are down.

BTW, most nudists are older; they have learned to accept their bodies. Good for you at such a young age to have such a healthy perspective of yourself.

I've recently switched from a gym with all cubicle showers to one with a couple of cubicles and about 6 open showers. I didn't realise until my first visit so came as a little surprise to turn the corner and see 3 very naked men happily showering away!

A cubicle was free but I decided to just go for it and became number 4...and I'm glad I did. It was my first ever experience of open showers and my overwhelming feeling was it just felt more comfortable than being crammed into a tiny dark cubicle. I'm not going to pretend I didn't sneak a little peek at the other guys (who incidentally were all probably early-mid 20s despite the stereotype us young guys do everything possible to avoid being naked in public) but to be honest it didn't feel sexual, just relaxing and refreshing to see each other on the same level. I noticed the other lads having a quick glance too, it's only natural for guys to compare.

Next to the showers is a drying off area with the idea being you get basically dry before heading back to your locker to avoid wet floors etc. Guys seem pretty relaxed about drying off in the buff, which is the only way, no point trying to pull your boxers up under a towel. For me, that's way less awkward then drying off naked by your locker next to a fully dressed guy who's just arriving.

I've seen young guys, older guys and everyone in between enjoying a shower uninhibited and it's honestly great. It's not just gay/bi guys showing off, some of the lads are obviously straight 'gym lads' but are secure enough not to care who sees them naked.

For me open showers are quicker, more efficient and probably more hygienic than stalls where guys like to shave, and maybe do other things...if I ever move out of Manchester I'd make it a key reason for choosing another gym/pool. We need less modesty and more natural, non-sexual nudity!
Which gym is it

Nice to see guys your age still leading the way and confident to be naked with other guys.
