Ryan Guzman

Shame he thinks racial slurs are acceptable... even his cast mate from 9-1-1 is disgusted by his behaviour.
What gags me is that he was stupid enough to say it on social media so matter of factly lmao

Yeah I won't be shocked if we don't see him in the next season of 9-1-1, whether they write his character off or recast.

Literally every single comment under the official 9-1-1 Twitter account is telling them to fire Ryan, and people have been @'ing higher ups. Then of course his coworkers stood against him on the matter.

What way did he use the word? And what word did he use exactly? Negro or Nigga? Or Nigger?

I'm black. I don't get offended when a non-black uses the word in a way to relate to a friend or referencing someone as long as it's not demeaning or racially motivated. For example, black ppl say "my nigga", to embrace someone as a companion. In another case, one may say "This nigga did such and such..." as a way of telling a story. Now if Ryan only used that term in those types of situations or similar ones then I'm totally ok with it.

I also find it ridiculous when black people get upset at a non-black using it, if that black person uses it themselves. Why glorify, try to stake claim, and take pride in a word that was once used derogatory towards us but call others out for using it in non-disrespectful ways. Sure we called ourselves Negus once, which means ruler or supreme ruler. But we don't say Negus. Idk talk to me yall

I'm not black but here's my argument: if I were in my circle of friends and they made a gay slur to me as a means of affection, I'm allowed to decide if I have an issue with it or not. But other gay men don't have to be that forgiving and that's their right.

Just because you and Ryan's black friends are okay with him using racial slurs affectionately, doesn't mean other black people have to be. And certainly not when he's stupid enough to admit it on IG live as if people were just gonna be fine with it.

so you are saying you disapprove of it? Or you agree that anyone can decide how they feel and that is okay?

I'm saying I can't control how a black person chooses to react to this. That is not my lane to be in. But others are allowed to react negatively and we shouldn't defend his actions either because it is inherently wrong despite some black people being fine with it.

The thing is is that I thought it was his wife that used the slur. Yeah from what I heard I guess she used it on social media, which was stupid, and people got wind of it. So they came after her. And he was defending her and all of that. Which is what a husband should do. But at the same time it’s like this don’t use words that are offensive in general.

I’m biracial and I have friends that use that word and honestly it makes me uncomfortable. I wouldn’t want either race saying either version of the word. Like I think it’s stupid to use either term.
And I definitely don’t approve of people using the F word towards gay people either. I mean that’s just me. I just think that at the end of the day don’t use words that are offensive. The F word or the N-word are offensive. Some people may not think so, but it is. Even if people say it’s OK just don’t use it at all.

A couple thoughts (coming from an Afam):

1. There isn’t some pass that black people can give to their non-black friends. Just bc you’re friends with black people and they’re ok with you using a word doesn’t mean you can bring that energy outside your group. That goes directly to Ryan bc his defense of his fiancée was that he and his multi-ethnic group of friends like to use slurs in a jovial sense. Cool, that’s your choice but that stays with y’all. I also think that Ryan is equating white insults (ie cr*cker or h*nky) to ethnic slurs which isn’t equal in my book but I’ll let that slide bc I’m not white and if you guys are calling those slurs in 2020 then ok, I guess.
2. I do think that black people need to remember that our culture is global and that people from all over the globe use that word and I don’t know if that’s ok or not. I’ve been to several LA countries including Brazil and n bombs are prevalent and everyone is tanned and racially ambiguous so I just don’t know. Obviously America’s strict racial system doesn’t really translate to other cultures and in Brazil the majority of their population are mixed race. What’s the racial genetic threshold for using the n word? No idea.
3. Digging up old tweets aren’t ok in my book. Like what’s the point? Everyone has said something dumb and I wouldn’t expect anyone’s views from 9 years ago to be unchanged.

I say all that to say those old tweets should have never been dug up in the 1st place but had he just apologized for his fiancé instead of using the excuse of them having black friends that are ok with that then this would have never got traction.

Wow so disgusted with him.
Right. How easy would it have been for him to just say, “look what my wife said was wrong. I do not stand for what she said at all. And I’ve spoken to her about that and it’s something that’s ever going to happen again. No slurs will be used from me or my family at all. We respect everyone from all walks of life.”

Like how hard would it have been? Like it’s not that hard. What she said was wrong even if it was in the past. I’d like to believe that she knows better now. And I’d like to believe that he would know better as well. I mean hell he’s a minority too for crying out loud. So you would think he would prohibit anyone from using any kind of slurs around him or anyone else because it’s disrespectful.
