I have little theory as to why things like height, muscular body weight, and of course penis dimensions are so commonly exaggerated.
Part of this is because men are partially rated on things like height, muscularity, and, yes, how big their dick is. In terms of what context they are rated in, height is the one that affects men in social situations, both non-sexual and during sexual selection, similar to muscularity. Other men, even if they have no intention of fighting, instinctively perceive the danger of a muscular man and tend to act more respectfully. These characteristics, when they exceed the average, more often than not, are found appealing to potential sexual partners, too.
In terms of penis size, men with a larger penis are more likely, all else being equal in terms of hardness, to stimulate the nerves of a vagina or other orifices. It looks more appealing, the same way we go for a larger piece of fruit at the grocery store. So, there is sexual selection there, even in modern times.
Meaning there are still real-world benefits to having more of those characteristics, and negatives to having less. So, men, regardless of where they rank in those categories, are going to use every tactic they can in what is a competitive environment to get a one-up on the competition. The issue is that everyone else is doing the same thing.
Guys also tend to grossly overestimate the importance of having extra in terms of those same characteristics. This is why anabolic steroid use is so common and why bodybuilders and even muscular gym rats are notorious for exaggerating their muscular bodyweight, despite the fact that simply looking at them, it's already self-evident they are extremely muscular.
It is well known that a guy who has 6ft on his dating profile will get a lot more replies than a guy who is listed at 5'11". The difference is large enough that it's become a running gag for some time. So, many men, possibly most, add an inch or two.
And yes, that also applies to penises. By percentage of exaggeration, it's getting inflating more than pro-wrestler heights and weights. It's the intimate male organ, and therefore, it standing out more than others, or the inverse, is going to have the largest effect on their perceived self-value.
Come to think of it, even the other characteristics that people derive perceived value from are also often exaggerated. It's common for men to exaggerate their income and their sexual exploits, and everyone knows at least one guy who is driving a vehicle he cannot really afford.
