Today's mood

Worried.

My husband has been awake most of the last two nights—yes, Christmas Eve and Christmas—coughing like he’s about to die, and normal OTC remedies (prescribed by the doctor we saw late in the afternoon Christmas Eve) don’t stop the coughing. Also, his coughs are starting to settle deeper in his chest, which is alarming.

We’re going back to the doctor when his office opens in about an hour and a half. I really hope my man doesn’t develop bronchitis or pneumonia while we’re here with his family for the holidays, but the signs aren’t looking good: his father and sister have just had colds, and his sister-in-law has just lost her voice. Unusually rainy and cold weather is not helping.

So, being a worrier at the best of times, I’m restraining myself from calling Expedia and demanding a flight back to the US later today—especially since my husband admitted about an hour ago that he can’t travel in this condition.

NCbear (who’s taking deep breaths and thinking calming thoughts—and reminding myself that something similar happened the last time we were here, and the love of my life got better quickly)

Update: An X-ray yesterday showed no bronchitis or pneumonia, so the doctor gave my husband some pills for gastric upset (???!!!!) and sent him home. Said doctor also admitted he was “experimenting” and trying to find a solution to the coughing and spitting up yellow mucus (which has always been a well-known sign of either sinus or upper respiratory infection, to me!).

So for the fourth night in a row, I was awake past 3:00 a.m. listening to my husband try to cough up his toenails. His diaphragm muscle actually hurts from the exertion! And the only way I was able to get him to sleep was to load him up on an OTC antihistamine and two OTC cough suppressants. It’s painfully obvious that he needs an antibiotic to kill the infection, but that the doctor has been told in these days of antibiotic resistance to prescribe fewer antibiotics.

So today we probably will be going to a different doctor.

NCbear (who’s still worried about my husband; adding considerably to the worry, my father-in-law fell in the night while going to the bathroom and was found prone and shivering in a puddle of piss in the early morning, and now he can’t remember having had the experience, so now an extremely poor family in Mexico will have to find the time and money to get/provide home health care for/to the family patriarch)

2nd update: New doctor prescribed an antibiotic. Husband already taking it. Already seeing an improvement in his condition (more drainage led to huge coughing and then progressively less coughing as the day has worn on).

Father-in-law’s condition is improving as well, though more slowly.

NCbear (who’s grateful for the community’s support at a difficult time)

3rd update: Now I’ve caught what my husband has. His illness is on the way out of his body, while mine is just starting.

NCbear (who is sure in the moment that there are few things worse than being sick on a long vacation—a first world problem, yes, but I still feel like shit and know it’s only gonna get worse for several days before it gets better)
