Do I trust everything the govt. tells us? Hell no! Can I trust them to enforce a law which prevents people from distributing fake (unauthorised) images of people? Surely!

That might be so because Uncle Sam prides itself as the quintessential model for capitalism which favours the set of elites to control the government.
