The people defending Will really are demonstrating the divide between those of us who possess class and civility and those of us who don't. It seriously does not matter if he was "standing up for his wife". It was a joke (however poor in taste it might have been). That occurred at the Oscars of all places. For Will to respond that way in that forum was wholly inappropriate and there are no excuses. Realistically speaking, he should be banned from the Oscars for behaving like that.
It occurred at the Oscars, the same award show that has a long history of awarding pedophiles and rapists? Y’all are very weird.

Words are violence too. Black folk and First Generation folks understand this more than most.

I’m sad Will chose to respond this way but Chris has gone out of his way to taunt him and Jada. This includes writing on their IG posts to Will’s ex wife and so on. Misogynoir isn’t excusable. People lose their lives to words every day.

Chris did an entire segment in his documentary on hair with a lady suffering from Alopecia. The joke wasn’t on the teleprompter. This idea that comedians are a protected class isn’t real.

No matter how differently I’d go about this (saving my venom for the speech), Black women rarely see a boundary set by Black men this publicly. This is why many of them remain conflicted. Nuance isn’t for everybody though.

So what you're saying is if someone doesn't like what you're saying they can go and assault you? Is that the example you wanna set for society? Is it cos it will not end well for minorities.

Silence is violence, words are violence but violence is not violence. That's whack and you know it.

Chris Rock is one of the greatest comic writers in history he didn't know she had alopecia and even if he did it was an incredibly tame joke and oh boy Chris Rock is a gentleman for not saying what every other comedian on the planet wanted to say in response to "keep my wife's name out ya mouth " ohh boy I wish he did lol

....who was asked to leave the event ? Will. Who was condemned by the person he won the Oscar for portraying? Will. Who might lose their SAG membership and thus never work again in an American film or television production? Will. Who will never be invited to an event again? Will. Who has in sixty seconds ruined their career? Will.

Love Will, always have but there's no justifying this ...and those who are pretty much advocating for public speakers to be smacked over if people don't like what they have to say, that'll go down really well for indigenous, LGBT+ and folks of colour.. we'll be assaulted constantly for speaking out.

And don't use social justice terms to justify a black man hitting a black or any violence that's wack.

Will Smith has already confirmed Jada was free to do as she pleased in the confines of their marriage. Why are y’all so weird about ethical non monogamous marriages?
Why are y'all so happy with sleeping with everything walking? Now that's weird...

Learn self control!

So you don’t read. Got it.

Oh here we go with the whataboutery. We aren't capable of opposing what Will did and also opposing any recognition of pedophiles and rapists as well? All of those instances were also wrong. Who exactly is out here defending Roman Polanski but bashing Will Smith??! I'm also not saying that what Will did was the worst thing that has ever happened at the Oscars.

You're being hyperbolic. Words can be violent, but Chris literally just made a reference to Jada's baldness. That's it. It's not like he told her to take her bald-headed ass and jump off a cliff. Now that would constitute violence.

And this is the problem. People with a certain mindset will continuously find any way they can to justify unprovoked violence as a way of shutting down speech they don't like. It's a very slippery slope. This isn't about comedians being a "protected class" but it is about them being regular people who don't deserve to fear their audience members pummeling them in the face if they make the wrong joke. Which is literally every joke if any particular person there finds it offensive. There is no humor that is off the table in this regard, let's be honest. Anyone can claim "words are violence" about literally anything if they want to. If anyone truly believes that black women are being subjected to physical violence because of their baldness just because of something like Chris Rock said, they need psychiatric help.

Not sure using race to justify his violence is warranted?

It was a slap. Let’s move on. We are not going to pretend America doesn’t love violence.
Plenty of us don't love violence, no matter who the victim is. Y'all want to keep acting like we have all these double standards just because of "such and such violent act that happened in the past", which is not reflective of most of our viewpoints.

I responded to the wrong comment yours makes no mention of silence being violence or justifying it.

Lynae always gets it. She even got a bible verse in there for the ‘God don’t condone violence, only love’ folk.

It wasn’t about folk supporting Will’s choice. We’ve all said it was a poor choice. It was, however, about a boundary being set. There was no reason to bring Jada into this again.

What I am not about to do though, is gang up on Will alongside a group of people who have the most violent history on this planet—not when they seem committed to throwing all his good will away.

How are the loudest folk in the room pro-war, pro-gun, pro-police, anti-consent but anti-palm all of a sudden? The Academy says this incident didn’t maintain its integrity. Exactly what integrity does it have to stand on? They just started letting Black folk in lol.

Chris has admitted understanding social cues is challenging for him. Perhaps that’s why he continued to come after Jada with a “joke” that wasn’t approved by the academy in the first place.

I wish Will had used his speech to educate instead of tap Chris up. It’s likely the course of action I’d take. That doesn’t mean I do not understand his choice.
