Well, I think what you're also seeing now is earlier access to hormone replacement therapy than in years past. It's one of those things where if you're committed to doing it, it has a greater impact if you start earlier.

Moreso than HRT, androgen drugs can be used in trans children to hold puberty off until HRT can be prescribed.

Likely the trans kids in your school were closeted because A) people make nasty dehumanizing comments and reduce them to sexual objects, and B) the likelihood of getting beaten or killed.

Kids are lucky today that the closet isn't the norm. I still think the trans path is very hard. I was very closeted.
