How comfortable are men with being nude in communal showers and locker rooms in your country or culture?

Wow. The USA is getting really ridiculous and I think it has something to do with religion.

Religion is on a downward swing. Now nudity is a problem. When everyone went to church, nudity in the locker room was not a problem. Nudity did not slowly go away but did so almost suddenly. It disappeared before cellphones were universal. Guys I knew who were naked every chance suddenly did the towel dance. Why? What changed? I do not know.

Personally, I think it is related to the realization that gay men are everywhere - something that probably really set in with the release of the Queer Eye for the Straight Gay TV series back in 2003.

Before that, straight men were all vaguely aware of homosexuals but, for the most part, did not know any in our personal orbit and those that we did know were mostly of the "flaming" variety, so easily spotted.

THIS!!! I find this sooo accurate. After living in various countries in Europe, in cities like Milan and London, I can confirm this. The higher you go on the gym hierarchy pricepoint, (a luxurious gym), pricier the more facilities you have and the more people shower. You often get towels included and cleaner showers. In cheap chain gyms you'll almost never see people shower. In the more affluent gyms, almost everyone showers no matter the age.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing in NYC. In Manhattan gyms where college-educated professionals and execs work out, people are way more comfortable with nudity—they just let it all hang out. But in the more affordable/cheaper gyms in Queens, where most of the guys are working-class or immigrants, it’s a completely different vibe. Hardly anyone showers, and if they do, they’ll change in a stall like they’re scared of anyone seeing them naked. It’s like the more money, education, and privilege you have, the more confident you are and the less you worry about showing your body naked.

So backwards. It pisses me off that boys and men were forced to swim naked, while women and girls were allowed to be fully covered. Sometimes boys would be forced to swim with clothed girls and female PE teachers around, sick exploitation of those poor boys. How did society allow this? If I were a parent at that time I would have raised hell till change happens.

I did not know this was a thing till today. That probably messed with the heads of so many men. Saw 3 winners from Michigan State University’s swim teach back in the 1930’s standing completely naked, while two women and a group of men and boys stand there and watch them. So degrading and humiliating, like why didn’t men fight this?

I don’t think this had anything to do with “male bonding” I feel gay coaches made these rules around the country to look at naked men. Also, women and girls were never forced to share their bodies with the world the way boys and men were. I’m attracted to men, but I don’t like the exploitation of men. I feel men’s nudity should be covered outside of male only spaces. These swimming pools had women and girls watching the boys and men swimming, which I find inappropriate, because nobody would have been ok with adult men and boys watching girls and women swim naked.
