OK, so here's the deal. On the Sean Cody website, there are only 42 videos available from the first 7 years 2001-2007. A lot of those videos are solos.

all videos from 2008 were completely deleted.

There are 29 videos from the next 5 years 2009-2013.

all videos from 2014 was also completely deleted.

So, from the first 14 years of sean cody, we have less than 100 vids.

Baring a few small gaps, the videos past late febuary 2015 are still available. I don't think it's a coincidence that whispers of a Mindgeek aquisition were happening in January of 2015. Exclusive: Sean Cody Acquired By Mindgeek/Manwin, A.k.a. the Same Company That Owns Men.com - TheSword.com

Also, The Pornhub scandal and news firestorm happened in early December of 2020, while Sean cody began deleting their vids a few weeks after.

It's very obvious what happened, The timeline lines up too well. The scandal spooked mindgeek, and they realized that the old sean cody vids either didn't have the right documentation or the documentation was lost. So, they bit the bullet and deleted all the vids to make sure to be safe and not sorry.
With this in mind, does anyone know if there are any massive datahoard of all their videos for historical preservation?

Looks like it. I haven't been on Sean Cody's site in a long, long time and decided to see what all the deletion fuss was about and goddamn it's basically a wasteland over there.

For fun, I searched for Noel just to see what was left, and they only had one scene: his scene with Sean. All the others were gone. I heard it was dire, but didn't know it was that dire.

Wild, man.
wait are they deleting things AGAIN?!

This is hysterical. So if what you're saying is so obvious, then I'm dying to know how you explain the fact that pop-up versions of scenes (which were released in 2020) are still on the site, but the original scenes (filmed pre-Mindgeek) are deleted. They're the same damn scenes, except the pop-up versions have informative bubbles on them.

Go ahead. Let's hear it.
Not so hysterical now, is it?

Randomized said everything I would have said, a few posts up.

I stand by everything I said.

Yep, excellent summary.

Only one more point to add.

After deleting al the videos, Mindgeek then spun some BS stories about how they were only doing "maintenance," or some such, and the videos would be returning. They gambled that most people would lose interest in the whole fuss after a couple of weeks, and they were probably right.

And today, 2+ years later, SC is a phantom of what it once was. It's a zombie site from which you cannot download with a standard membership, and where the videos are all recent ones nobody would want to download anyway.

I'll confess I didn't know what I was talking about. My apologies. I see now that they've apparently deleted both versions of said scenes where the original was shot pre-MG acquisition.

However, my general point still stands that it's not apparent what happened. Remember, MG is a company that snaps up other companies to dissolve into its brand. Whereas the classic SC is beloved many gay porn fans, I would suggest to you that MG has no such allegiance. It's been said that they are out to simply turn out profit, plain and simple. It's entirely possible they bought SC and eventually deleted most of the content put out by the original owner simply because they wanted to put their own personal stamp on the brand. It's not unheard of.

It's probably one of those things we'll never know the real answer to.

Don't be naive. Companies usually don't delete their own content unless they are absolutely forced to.

It sound like your proposal is that MG deleted the old content because it didn't fit their brand. I guess that's possible, but I think it's far more likely that it all comes down to money.

Companies won't remove content that can make them money unless that content becomes a liability. In the pornhub scandal, the credit card companies cut them off and they lost a ton of money. Shortly after that, SC removed the content. It's very obvious to make the connection when you follow the money.

I should point out that it's really not uncommon for studios to ditch much of their real early catalog. CF & Chaos Men, for example, have done this. This applies to other studios as well. I don't really know why, but an educated guess is something to do with quality. Everything now is in hi-definition and stuff like that, so they probably figured the market isn't there for decades-old scenes that are kind of grainy. Not saying that I agree with it (I don't), but I think that's why it happens.

Here's another thing to consider. While I fully sympathize with fans of the old material who are aching that it's gone, it's also worth pointing out that MG has owned SC for 8 years now. They now have a large library of their own material. If my theory is correct that MG simply wanted to latch onto SC because it was a proven commodity and milk it for all its worth, they (quite simply) don't need to have the old scenes around. Where do you think newer fans are going to look? Do you think they're going to watch new scenes or go back to scenes that were (in some cases) shot before they were even born. Again, I'm not saying I agree with it, but I'm also a big picture thinker. Most of the people who yearn for the better days of yore have already saved what they wanted to and moved on.

Many of the videos that SC removed were high definition. I'm not sure why you think they were decades-old and grainy quality. Maybe that would apply for the first couple of years, but 10 years ago, SC was releasing videos with Stu and Abe and Brandon in high-def and all of those videos are gone.

Also, it is interesting that you bring up CF and Chaosmen. CF has not deleted thousands of videos from their archives. As far as I know, they removed a handful of videos for various reasons (I think one model committed suicide, another was killed), but the vast majority of their content is still online as opposed to SC. I don't follow Chaosmen as closely, but I can still search and find videos from 10-15 years ago on the site, so it doesn't look like they have removed much.

Furthermore, both CF and Chaosmen have gone back to remaster their old videos in higher quality formats, so they clearly understand the value of their back catalogue. They keep the old videos because they know they can use them to make money. That's a strong argument for why SC would keep their videos unless they were forced to remove them.

I appreciate your polite apology. :)

I don't think there's really any chance Mindgeek deleted the SC back catalog in order to build their own brand, however, because the videos they've created since then have been basically the same as the old ones, just not as well made.

Also, they waited five years after taking over the company, and then deleted basically the entire back catalog, overnight, about two weeks after a huge controversy erupted in the world of porn, in which it seemed likely that credit card companies would drop lots of porn sites for lack of proper paperwork.

I think there's a 99.99999999% chance that was the reason for the GREAT PURGE, sadly.

That's not factually correct. Corbin Fisher and Chaosmen have never done anything like that.

The most they've done is the very targeted removal of videos from a handful of individual models, for specific reasons. Their back catalogs remain available to members.
