Open Showers

Unfortunately, there are not enough people standing up and saying, "NO, we are not putting up dividers and curtains because YOU do not want to be seen naked!"

I agree with what you are saying -

When I was a young the gym teacher would tell anyone that did not want to shower it was THEIR problem - get over it. And we all did.

But who is going to be the person arguing "We should all be naked in the locker room!" - that kind of statement will probably get you banned from the locker room.

I have been living in many different countries and at least in Spain public sport centers usually have open showers.

During my teenage years never showered in open showers as I was not required at school and didn’t practice any team sports.

As an adult is when I started doing it as Spain has amazing public sport centers and 99% of them have open showers and honestly helped me a lot with self stemming and not feeling bad about my body.

After I moved to UK and have bad experiences about a big problem that I feel society have.

I joined leisure focus because I like swimming and they manage the only swimming pools around my area (Windsor). For my dissapointment both locations with pools (Windsor and Braywick) have a locker room village.

In Windsor basically you are obligated to change inside a cubicle and the showers are the typical pre-swim showers in front of the pool. In the toilette they have an open shower with 3 heads in the same wall (one not working) and usually is very flooded. One day showering there I was naked and 2 other guys showering in swimshorts what made me uncomfortable but I decided to stay as I have the right to shower properly!

in braywick is worse! They opened this state-of-the-art facility one year ago and the showers are like the changing rooms, cubicles! No men showers only and no open showers.

I believe that we are walking in the opposite direction as we should. I am not looking for crusing or sex, just some space to be naked, relax and enjoy a good shower, find gross washing myself with soap while wearing swimwear or worse underwear!

Now I live in Ireland, I still need to try facilities here but I believe irish people are more old school in the good sense and have open showers. In my gym that is more like a sports club they have open showers (ALSAA if anyone is asking) but I want to try to national aquatic center that is a very modern facility to see what they have in the locker room.

When I was South Korea open showers and baths everywhere. In Iraq closed off showers but men and their sons would swim in the lakes and rivers naked.

I'm all for multi-culturism, but I think a lot of changes are the result of pressure from religious conservatives. They don't want to be seen, and they don't want to see others, so to accommodate everyone, cubicles have become the norm.

Gyms have become incredibly prudish, even on a busy evening, I seem to be the only person using the showers more often than not. Friends with teenage children have said showers are no longer mandatory at school, so most do gym class then spray themselves with deodorant afterwards, or just smell.... mostly the latter.

I am thinking of making a private gym where the dress code is nothing but your birthday suit.

I was on vacation recently and went to an aquatic park where the changing room had a row of stall showers with no doors. There was a father & adult son and another stranger changing in there when I went in, showered, and changed. I think if gyms simply built the showers open like they were in the past, most people would eventually just use them and this nervousness around nudity would go away. My gym has stall showers with doors and still the number of young men I've seen dry themselves off with hair dryers after leaving the sauna instead of just showering and toweling off is ridiculous.

What was the name of this park? Where was it?

Interesting thing happened at my gym this morning. I was heading to the showers and at the same time these two younger guys were leaving the sauna. I had towel in hand they were in swim trunks. After reaching the shower, they started soaping themselves up with their trunks on and I continued to soap myself up and all of a sudden they took their trunks off and soaped their entire body as they should have in the first place. Hopefully, they will continue showering without their trunks as they saw no one give a shit.

I guess they realized how silly and ridiculous they look trying to shower with sweaty swim trunks on!

Also, in Berlin, I blame religion. Muslims are brainwashed to not show themselves. In my gym, it is the new Muslims (second-generation Turks are mostly over it.) They created a petition and insisted that the shower room have dividers. The manager put clear plexiglass with no curtains, so they got 'dividers'; when they complained about this, he told them they should have been more specific; they asked for dividers, not cubicles. They still shower in their underwear.
I was in Berlin in June last year. Went to one of the Sommerbad outdoor pools. The showers were open, and I was surprised to see two Turkish guys showering naked. Their cocks were circumcised, everyone else had foreskins.

Most of the second generation of Turks are very comfortable, It is the new immigrants that complain. Also Turkey has a lot of non Muslims who have no issues.

Some people first washing off the chlorine from the pool. That what I was taught. Now if that is true or a myth idk.

Why does an individual’s showering method bother you?

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. I have no issue with their showering method just talked about them showering with clothes on. Swim trunks are not shower attire, last time I checked. Therefore, not sure how or why you thought I was questioning someone showering method!

By the way, I am not bothered by it at all as I have never showered with any clothes on, have you?

Ok cool I thought so but couldn't remember for sure
Yup, wash the stinky sweat and dirt off so you can sweat clean sweat!

Despite what the two Millennial/GenXers claimed the other day, that they read on the internet that the sauna ‘kills” the dirt and you don’t even have to shower afterwards.

Lol yeah only if the sauna is full of bleach or some other germ killer.
