If someone can make a length estimate they can surely, by recognition of proportions, make a girth estimate. It lends to the notion of the estimator's legitimacy of skill and builds confidence in the estimate. Just ask yourself, if that's only "8ish", does that really mate well to the girth on display? Or, perhaps, noticing the gradient of girths in that single unit pointing out a much narrower girth at the distal end could bring further validity to the length estimate.
